Degrees Kelvin is, although outdated. Apparently we're supposed to measure
    in the plural kelvins now.

Seems a bit harsh, given that Celsius and Fahrenheit got to keep the
    capitalisation on their measurements!

In Essex we have three selection by exam only Grammar Schools[1] what
are only open to kids who have genius plus levels of intelligence. All
funded from the taxes and no amount of money can get your kid a place
there. The only qualification is being so far from the norm that you
    need special help.

In fairness though it has to be noted that the Grammar schools were kept
for the benefit of snobs and then usurped by the altruistic. Good
    innit?

It's how all schooling should be, because then the education can be
carefully tailored to the students, rather than the one-size-fits-all
    current approach.

One man's "carefully tailored" is another man's "elitist", and you'll
never achieve enough granularity - the kids who just miss out on the
grammar school could argue they've been left on the scrapheap.

There's no reason adequate streaming can't take place in comprehensive
schools, the only "benefit" from the grammar schools is that they keep
those nice middle class kids safely isolated from the nasty kids from
the comp down the road, saving those nice middle class parents a fortune
in school fees to achieve the same ends.

I meant carefully tailored over the whole range of ability, not just
    the top end.

And I honestly see nothing wrong with schools being "elitist",
especially with regard to streaming by ability.

After all, that's what the rest of life is like.

I think you have a very distorted view of grammar schools. I went to
one, and there was no shortage of poor/rough/black/paddy[1]/etc. kids
there. No girls though, which is a major failing of any education
    system, IMO.

[1] Just the local demographic - at that time there were quite a few
oirish families around, but mostly the Asians didn't arrive until a
    few years later.

There weren't any blacks or asians at my grammar, apart from one
chinese kid, who died of a brain tumour in the first year.

Actually, now I think of it, there were only a couple of black kids at
mine, but then again, there were none at all in the primary school I
attended - but I put it more down to local population demographics
than anything else. Most of the black families tended to live in other
catchment areas, I guess - not that I was in a well-off area or
    anything; far from it.

At KEGS Aston (my old skool), 40% of the names of the pupils admitted to
the school [1] in 2001 are of *seemingly* Asian origin.

[1] All names from 1883 to 2001 are available as an Excel file.
