So they've put the money into making the unit itself sound as good as
possible. As opposed to making it sound just 'ok', bunging a colour TFT
on it and throwing in lots of accessories.

I can spend £200 on a pair of top notch 'phones if I feel the need to,
or £50, at a later date.

That sounds strange to me. Surely the way you feel about any track depends
on what mood you're in? Are you trying to pretend you live in the future
when computers will be able to choose everything for you?

I'll dedicate that post to the memory of Frank Zappa ...

Great. Now I've got the image of a dildo with a headphone socket
stuck in my mind, and guess where the socket is...

Well it lets you rate songs from zero stars to five stars.

What those stars represent is up to you.

For me, I've uploaded all my music to it, and then as I listen to each
    track I classify it so:-
    5* = Dance
    4* = Rock
    3* = General
    2* = Ambiant
    1* = Love
0* = crap to be deleted

So not really a "how much I like it" rating, cause as you say what I
want to listen to varies on my mood, but its great for classifying
unclassified tracks. I can then synch it all back to the PC, and bung
all the (e.g.) 4* stuff into its own named playlist.

I don't do this on my PC because I hardly ever sit there listening to
    music on my PC.

I suppose once I've got the 15000 tracks classified I could move onto
rating each song by how much I like it, or maybe how "rocky" or "dancy"
it is, and then create further playlists, or cross referenced playlists.

Like I say, its got no defined, fixed use, so you can use it for
    whatever you want to :)

Why don't you do this by genre?
The the stars can represent how much you like a given song in a given
    genre.
