I rarely use anything other than internet and machines for
all my banking, both personal and business.

However, I need to contact my branch in order to open another
account. I've spoken to a couple if nice people in India but
can I actually get to speak to someone at my branch?[1]

<fx:taps fingers impatiently waiting for a call back>

    [1] My branch isn't local. It's the one I've used since I
was a teenager and I've never had any real problems so I've
    kept my accounts there.

AIUI it comes from "personal history fishing". So I suppose it should
    really have been called "phisting".

He does seem to have a bit of a blind spot when it comes to some money
matters. When I was buying the 400-4 from him he even refused to give
me his account details to let me transfer funds in directly. Not a
problem, like, but a bit OTT to say the least.

<more accurate etymology of "phishing" snipped>

    <sigh>
I was only trying to match the tone of this thread to that or UKRM in
    general.

  9. With that sort of attitude I'm surprised you even give them
your money in the first place.

A guy I knew[1] doing the same course as me had a similar
attitude. Just didn't trust banks, any of them. But had
to put his grant cheque somewhere... So on the first of
each month, went to bank and cashed a cheque, and then
kept that money in his room for *all* expenditure. Cut up
all credit and debit cards as soon as they got to him.

A loon. Got a first in physics, but that doesn't stop him
    being a loon.

[1] not really a friend as such; just didn't speak much.

It was a fucking pain in the arse. "You want immediate access to /your/
money Sir. No. I am afraid we can't be having any of that pinko anti
capitalistic carrying on in our bank."

You could only withdraw money from your own branch (unless you had a
prior written arrangement with another branch) between 10 am and 3 pm
Monday to Friday with half day closing rigidly enforced. Provided you
could prove to their complete satisfaction that you were who said you
were and had sufficient funds not only to cover the withdrawal but also
the horrendous charges they imposed on you for doing just that.

The hole in the wall was a godsend for workers paid by means other than
    cash.

I was well advised by a Babcock chief site engineer in 1978. He maintained
that most anyone who was desperate to get at their pay packet at the
beginning of the month was a useless **** and probably rather worthless in
the job. With a few notable exceptions along the way and allowing for the
    unexpected he was right.
Rog maintained that not banking a good 4 wage packets behind you was a
    recipe for an Ulcer.

    Good point, well made.

Actually, I did spell it the right way, but it looked wrong, so I spelt it
the wrong way, which sort of looked right (sort of).

It's where Barclays say I should go if I want to make a payment to another
country. I live in Holland, so it's a bit difficult.
