It felt gutless full stop. Needed huge anmounts of revs on the clock
    to pull away.
Suspect what you like. They could build something better but the 400-4
wasn't it. I suspect you're some dopey twat who won't believe anything
good ever came out of the British bike industry.

Unfortunately, in 1975 that was sadly the case.

In this day and age of advanced sealants oil leaks should be a thing of the
    past.

A BMW dealer will supply tubes of Black Bond or get (similar) Loctite 598.
If there is a lot of case flex then Loctite 5910.

It'd destroy the thing's essential charm and beauty.

You're right, of course. 21st century chemical engineering can probably
    defeat 18th century mechanical engineering.

I've got to go and have a poke around at some point anyway to see if I
can figure out why the clutch is slipping, so I'll try to stop it
marking its territory at the same time.

Ah, but what's the clutch like?

And why haven't you bought one yet? Hmm? Hmmmm?

  9. My brother in law had a 400/4. I had a Kawasaki H1A at the same
time. The Kawasaki left the 400/4 for dead until we came to a corner
    or had to slow down...

And I had to stop for pertrol quite frequently....

I recall driving one of those round South London in about '84 or '85. It
was a current Ford UK model at the time.

I was driving an Essex-engined 1602 BMW around SE London at around the
same time. Bright yellow it was - with a huge bonnet hump to clear the
air filter. Ugly as **** but very rapid for its day.

    <misty eyed>

    Wish I had a photo.

  17. Long gone by then - Sierra, yes.

<goes all misty and wobbly as memory cells fire>

Savage were the first to stuff the V6 into the Mk1 Croatin [1], then
they did a Mk2 afair (Ford SA might have been doing it also); I'm unsure
about Savage and the Mk3/4, but I'm certain Ford SA did a Mk3/4 V6
Rotniac in SA, so any on the UK streets were imports either officially
or not. By that time Ford were shuttling models around from country to
country to suit different markets if there was a demand.

[1] Actually, George Morrison was, but don't tell anyone.

Good resource for this info here:

    http://www.cortina80.co.uk/

Officially, the V6 Cortinas in the UK had a 2.3 Cologne engine.

My cousin had a MkIV 2.3 Ghia back in the mid 80s.

Probly. I was working for Bovis '83-'87. The car was the company car of a
civil engineer (IIRC) by the name of Ian White[1]. According to wikipedia,
the V6 Cortina IV/V V-6 models were 2.3 Cologne engined. The 2.3 bit
tallies with my recollection. The Mark V seems to have finished in '82, so
if it was an '82 model, it could easily still have been in use as a company
car in '84/'85. Actually, now I think about it, the reason I had it was to
get it MOTed, so the example I had would have been at minimum 3 years old at
that time. I had the thing for a few days, as Ian was off on holiday. I
don't remember it being blisteringly fast, but it was quite rowdy and would
light up the back end on a whim. ISTR it was unfeasibly thirsty, too.

[1]Ian White MICE, which caused some of us a modicum of amusement.
