Phoned up my insurance broker today (CN) to get a quote for switching my
current insurance to a different bike, they said "sorry the insurance
company you are with will not insure you for that bike because the bike does
    not have a security device".

What do they mean by security device? They did say Datataging will not
    suffice.

So may not be able to have the bike because by the time a "security device"
is fitted it will no doubt be beyond my budget.

Had similar with my car insurance - company that insured me on the shite
old Primera wouldn't insure an Alfa 155 of similar value.

Ended up cancelling and going with a different insurer.

You could ask CN if they can do that, as they're only a broker.

They're a broker, tell them to find an underwriter who will.
Odd. But some thing Thatchem or Sold Secure approved should do it.
    Ask them what they want.

It's not impossible, I've got my GSXR insured with just a datatag on
    it.

yeah they can do that, but because my present insurance has two months left
to run it mean I would lose this years NCB... don't really want to do that.

I wonder if an immobiliser is classed as a "security device" for insurance
purposes and wonder how much that would cost fitted.

I've just had the same with H&R. 4 years no-claims. 32 yrs old, bike in a
    locked garage (brick built)
A big ground anchor and chain. Less than 2000 road miles in a year.
They refuse to cover a bike that is kick start only!

Bennetts quoted £170 which I thought was fucking expensive but I needed the
    cover so I took it.

It will, as you're cancelling a policy before the 12 months is up.

I only did it because I was only 2 months into a new policy.

  10. I think it might actually.

  11. If the new bike is a recent CB500S, it will still have the Smart Water stuff
in it, this may count as a security device.

Same here, I had to change insurance companies when I got the new R1 as the
previous co wouldn't insure the new one. I was also only a few months into
the year so just changed the policy over. But I did have to start the year
again as far as the ncb was concerned.

Maybe because it has no key.

Oh right, been back on to CN and they said the insurance company require
Thatcham cat 1 or cat 2, anyone know what that means in real life?... they
    didn't know themselves.

I assume it must be an alarm rating or maybe an immobiliser rating?

    Ah got it !

Cat 1 = offers the highest level of security with an all in one high
specification alarm and immobiliser security system

Cat 2 = is the entry level of vehicle security required by most motor
insurance companies, nearly all new UK spec vehicles have this already
fitted by the manufacturer, it is a high specification two circuit
    immobiliser without an alarm.

How about you do a search on the web for Thatcham's web site, where
(last time I looked) there have a document containing details of all
Thatcham Category 1 and 2 devices for all sorts of vehicles?

Yeah, basically alarms and immobiliser can be Thatcham approved. So
you'd need to get one that carries the appropriate rating.

I have only had one kickstart only bike, but I'm sure it still had a key for
the ignition, twas a DT175 or has the memeory faded ?

Yes, I'm puzzled by that too. Unless he means it's been modified so it
only needs a kickstart, i.e. it doesn't need a key at all.
