Insurance prices...

I was getting quotes of around £700 to £1200 for TPO cover on the GSXR400.
When I changed the cover to TPF&T the price went down to £570 to £1000
depending on who the quote was off...

Is the difference in price because they think I will be more responsible if
I have TPF&T insurance, or because there is now an excess?

Also, do I only pay the excess if there is a fire or theft claim, or do I
have to pay towards a third party claim?

    TIA

  2. No idea why TPF and T should be cheaper, put it down to the fact that
    insco's do weird stuff.

I would have thought your excess would only apply to F and T claims, I have
never come across an excess contribution to third party repairs.

BTW, have you tried Rampdale Insurance for a quote, they were the cheapest
    by a mile on my lad's NSR125.

  3. The difference in price is because if you bin your bike and no one else is
involved it doesn't cost them a penny. If you have a crash and it's someone
elses fault, it doesn't cost them a penny (unless you have legal cover but
that's another matter). The fact that you may have an accident as a result
of your own actions is quite a big factor in underwriting, hence age,
experience, points etc. To insure against this, as in a comprehensive
policy, is generally always going to cost more.

An excess is normally only paid towards the cost of repairs to or
replacement of your own bike. A TP is quite likely to claim their excess
back off of you or your insurance company if you were at fault in a claim.

Probably. TPO on my GSXR is more than fully comp[1].
You only pay the excess if _you_ make a claim against the policy.

Bad luck - hope you don't need to make a claim.

Their indian call centre is top notch - only bettered by the call centre in
    Swansea.
This is sarcasm, they are complete rubbish.

And, months, several letters and a few phone calls on I am still waiting for
them to give me back my NCB. No reason given.

    Never - ever - again.

Um, Red star have quoted me £89 TPF&T for my ZXR400. Are you a young person
living in a war zone with no no-claims?

19 years old, only 1 years no claims, as was knocked off my TZR just over a
year ago (not my fault but still going through on the cash side of things)
so I can't yet carry over my 2 years no claims from the other policy.
