Just phoned up Bennetts to get a quote on my thundercat and was told that
they refuse to do anything other than TPO cover.
They couldn't give a reason why other than "Because we don't" which is a
little odd because its a completely standard bike.
Is this a common thing , or a one off?

As it happens I'm quite happy with my renewal quote from my current brokers
who covered it without problems but I was just starting to do the shopping
    around thing anyway

What does one need to do to get a Q-plate stuck on your bike?

I seem to recall I was once trying to insure a Q plate bike.
I was getting quotes before i actually decided whether to buy the bike.
Not many people wanted to insure Q plates, and those that would insure, only
    offered TPO.

One buys a bike that was already on a Q as it was a stolen recovered.

I knew it wouldn't be worth as much as a normal bike , but at £1250 for a 96
thundercat I thought I wasn't going to go too far wrong :0)

As, I assume, it's a standard bike would it be worth speaking to your
local DVLA office about getting it off the Q plate and onto something age
    related?

Qs tend to get issued to machines of indeterminable age or provenance.
If you can get Yamaha to vouch for its age and validity.

TBH, I can't see just being a stolen recovered would warrant a Q plate.

  6. Pretty standard. If the frame and engine numbers are genuine, it should
be not impossible to get an age-related plate, but if they were ground
off by pikey scum who stole it then next to no chance.

Bike's are bosh, PC's are pointless, and the 2000's were nuts!
Bikes are great, PCs are super, and the 2000s are the time to be!
Save the apostrophe! Get 'em right! If in doubt, leave 'em out!!

You can also get a Q plate if the DVLA decide to withdraw your registration
number because, for example, you've been reported to them as being a naughty
boy who has been messing about with the size / spacing / font on your plate.

Personally I wonder if they are allowed to reissue and then sell plates they
have withdrawn. If they are then they could have a nice little earner going
    ....

Copper : Do you know why I've stopped you, sir?

    Driver : Um, no.

Copper : Well sir, I was following you down the road there, admiring your
plate "A1" when I noticed that it was under regulation size by 0.5mm. In
light of this I am reporting you to the vehicle licencing office, who may
chose to withdraw that registration mark. On yer way now!

    <Driver leaves>

Copper (into radio) : Oscar 7 to control, let the Swansea lads know that
they've got "A1" coming in, will you? Oh, and tell them to make it twenties
    this time.

Yup - ta. I'd seen it mentioned on insurance quotes and the like (in the
"bad things" section) but never knew how one actually ended up with one.
