you can only insure a commercial vehical as a commercial vehical, be warned
you can transfere your car insurance over to commercial vehical but you will
not be able to transfere it back!

  3. I think it may depend on the size, a friend of mine striggled when he
was running a ex-army truck to get insurance. His problem was that it
required a HGV licence, which he had. AIUI if it had been a more
'normal' sized vehicle[1] then it wouldn't have been a problem.
Certainly a couple of people at my dive club use transit sized vans as
personal transport but I don't know what if any problems they had.

Best bet I guess would be to make some phone calls before committing
    yourselves.

We're thinking of getting a van when the Fester dies. Someone on here
reckoned it was difficult to get insurance to run a van as a private
vehicle. All info welcome on this please.

Many companies offer insurance on vans for none commercial purposes,
www.cis.co.uk being one of the cheapest.

Loads of racers have the same problem. Ring CIS (www.cis.co.uk) for a
quote and make sure you say it's not for commerical use. Vans with a
camper conversion certificate are even cheaper, like mine.)

    Wrong!

Go online to Norwich Union, they do van insurance for private use and are
    considerably
cheaper than others I've had over the years.

I hate to do this, but you're right. I did the same when I ran a
Vauxhall Combo van as a private motor, having previously insured it as a
commercial. I was with Royal Sun Alliance then.

CIS used to class all vans being used privately as group 2, regardless
of age, value, make or model.

The only other thing I can think of is that I thought sweller was trying to
sell his van, if you're looking for one.

Not yet as we don't have any money... I am presently making the sunday
joint out of bits of discarded lorry tyre that I carve into shape with
the dremmel, then paint the appropriate colour with poster paints...
No one can bring themselves to eat it, its been served up 3 weekends
running... We're saving a small fortune on our sunday roast bills...

I'm selling it quite cheaply (now) and it's a good old bus. Needs tax
    though.

That might have been me, but having now bought a van, I can report that
there's a reasonable amount of choice, and no jumping through hoops required
to organise it. The quotes I got did vary *hugely* though (29 YO, full NCB
on the car, living in an OK area). From a shade under £500, right up to over
£1000, for a five year-old LDV pilot valued under £2000.

Eventually went with Direct Motorline (brokers), who credited me with 4
years NCB, despite the fact that I wasn't carrying-over any from the car,
plus supplied full 'get you home' breakdown cover for an extra £30.
