Insurance and exclusions

After the recent debates on insurance policies and 'garage' clauses I
thought I'd check to see what my Bennetts policy[1] has to say.
Basically if it's within 500m of the insured address and not garaged
then they will double the excess in the case of a theft. Which seems
fair enough to me, certainly better than "if it ain't garaged then it
    ain't insured".

One exclusion I did notice was "loss of or damage to helmets and
protective clothing". Anyone know of an insurer that does cover your
    gear in an off?

My Carole Nash policy has £1000 clothing/helmet cover with no excess.

Mine too. It's a separate policy bundled in the package with the
independant bike, legal & breakdown policies.

When I hit Bambi a few years ago, my domestic contents insurance paid
up for leathers and boots. Worth checking.

No excess? I'll have to check my policy, but it did have a £250
excess. So in the event of an off, after wear and tear is taken into
    consideration, it ain't worth claiming.

Oh I dunno, I'd rather pay 250 excess than replace a 400 quid Arai, and
700 quid set of custom made leathers, if that was the sort of gear I wore.

I put my bike clothes on my house policy with More Than. Cost an
extra tenner or so and gives me a £1000 single article limit and £3000
total cover. Excess is only £50.

I've done that *now*, and it also includes my camera gear, archery kit
etc., but when I had my prang, I got £25 for a one year-old £300
helmet. The rest of my kit wasn't scratched, so I only bothered
claiming for the helmet. Ho-hum, £25 was better than f*ck-all I
    suppose.

I've got it on the house insurance - added nothing to the premium, and
similar to Ben's it covers amounts well above what would
be needed if I wrote the whole lot off.

Thanks for the tip I'll check my household insurance. I once claimed
for theft on a lid and jacket[1] but wouldn't have thought to try and
    claim for damage.
