Instant fine for overdue tax

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by The Older Gentleman, Jan 1, 2004.

  1. This wonderful government's latest stealth tax (as the Times has
    correctly labelled it).

Overdue vehicle tax - instant 80 quid hit.

Sell a vehicle and don't inform DVLA - you're liable for the road tax
(and wait until the DVLA loses the paperwork, as they did to me with one
    bike I bought this year).

Find yourself in hospital after a crunch and your tax runs out - tough
    shit.

    And no appeals procedure.

    FERITE.

That has happened to me and I got a snotty letter from them. I wrote
back telling them I had a witness to my posting the paperwork to them in
the form of the local post office post master and would they get their
    act together.

    No answer!

    It's another stealth tax.

Simple. Change your tax disc a month early.

Well, you'll have the nice little printed receipt from the Post
    Office, for a start.

They are as subject to law as anyone else.

  10. You tell them that. You'll have to take legal action, at your own
    expense.

The Times has an excellent leader today, on just why this is appalling
    legislation.

Just seems to be another example of Geovernment departments being less
and less accountable and personal freedoms and rights being eroded.

So, they say "You haven't paid your VED, givvus £80", and you say "Yes
I have, look, here's the receipt, *and* the tax disc", and they go "La
la la, I can't hear you"?

    Excuse my scepticism.

Don't blame the gummint, blame the voters who voted for blur and his

been in the Labour Party manifesto for as long as there has been a
Labour Party but they do it every fucking chance they get.

    How does this affect SORN?
I presume that if you pay nothing at the Post Office
and keep the receipt for nothing, you are OK.

How does this affect the project bike that's been off the
    road since before SORN started?

I believe that pre-SORN bikes are exempt from all this skulduggery. [1]

  19. I've been involved in a government "no appeals" legislation. A friend
had his Brazilian girlfriend over on a return visit, he had spent a
month in Sao Paulo and she was returning for a month. Return ticket, her
car parked in SP airport long term, the whole nine yards. An arse hole,
the head of immigration called Colin Bull, cocked up as he thought he
had an illegal and had her entry overturned. He then lied to cover his
arse. He lied to an MP I involved. His closing argument was the law said
there is no appeal to his decision to refuse entry and she was put on
the next available return plane even though she was 100% legal.

  20. That's the kind of thing that really pisses me off. Some dimbulb with a
chip on their shoulder/axe to grind in the Augean stables of Westminster
comes up with this kind of scheme and with the stroke of a pen, makes it
    law.
Grrr... justice? What a fucking joke.
    Yep.
