My brother's latest project. He's fitting a Vincent engine to a Tiger
chassis to do the road of bones. I'll provide updates & pics as & when
    if anyone's interested.

heh. I'd been skimming through last night's posts, and ended up here
last without reading the title. My first thought was "that's insane!".

Does he mind if I fit a covert tracking device? I'd like to know where
to go to collect the engine after he dies.

So the silly bugger is trying to use a 60 year old engine which is
both a bastard to start and famous for unreliability in a bike
intended to cross one of the most remote and unmaintained roads
    in asia.
A few spare magnetos would be a good idea.

What could possibly go wrong ?.

They're easy to start & totally reliable when built properly.
Yeah, always handy to have when riding a bike with an alternator.
My guess is the engine will be fine but the rest of the bike will fall
    to pieces.

Didn't a Vincent engine use a Magneto as OE?

As for reliability, yeah if you rebuild one from scratch using loads of
    modern parts. Otherwise....

In that day I don't think "reliability" as we now refer to it was practical,
down to the materials science. It certainly challenged them to keep
    aeroplanes sunny side up.

I would have thought the reason he's going for a 60 year old design is
so that the Russians can re-engineer it on the way, which wouldn't be
possible with a new engine ?

Necessity, the mother of invention, I'm sure the chassis will come back
    as some half track hybrid.

Yes, they also had a Vincent chassis, suspension & wheels as OE...

Well be better to hook up a car alternator then!

Vincents are the family business. It'll be good publicity however it
    turns out.
I'll be first in line to buy it if it does!

Am I alone in having stood and looked at Vincents 100 times and though "ok a
few interesting ideas but what a load of old shite"

IWHT that the reason he's going with a 60 year old design is "Because he
    can".

No, but that applies to me with nearly all old bikes.

Indeed, a variant of "because it's there". I saw a wonderful Egli
Vincent at the 2008 MGP. I *think* it had an electric start as well as
an alternator, but my grey cells are often unreliable these days. Not
the best frame for the road of bones, granted.

It was probably a Godet rather than an original Egli.

You will?!? Seriously though, original Eglis are *very* rare, & it
would take a certain kind of nutter to muck around with one. Thankfully
my dad is one of those nutters, as you can tell from this pic of him
with one of his Eglis -

AOL. why aren't you riding one instead of that of that plastic-melting
piece of old Italian tat[1] that you've got?

[1]<thinks> I'll take that off your hands if you like - no need to pay me.
