Well if you won't, there's a bike-shaped gap in my garage...

being reasonable for a moment, Ben really does already have far too
many bikes he's never seen, let alone ridden.

I'd still vaguely like it back, but it'd have to wait until after I
    move house.

IIRC, you painted it black, is that right?

    Ugh. Birmingham.
similar price to where I live - bizarrely though, 2 bed flats tend to
sell for more than 3 bed terrace houses around my way.

Aye. It's looking a *lot* tidier. Black Frame, all the panels have
been fixed and resprayed, the seat is retrimmed. Almost a new bike....
    ....but, with a leak.

I'll take a picture at some point.

Might be quite ugly. And you'd definitely need /some/ living space on
the ground floor, or you'd feel like you were living in a flat, rather
    than a house.

Grimly's basement suggestion is much better, though more costly I
imagine. But if you're talking ideal dream houses then cost shouldn't
    factor anyway.

Yes, but more importantly, he doesn't have *any* bikes he's never seen,
let alone ridden, but that happen to be in my garage.

    I see an opening.

actually, there's a pretty nice 6-bed triple-garaged house for sale
around the corner from me. It's also got a basement
jacuzzi/sauna/entertainment complex. It's a bit out of my budget
    unfortunately, at £975,000.

It's a fairly standard practice across france. Even non-hillside
houses tend to be built with the ground floor raised from the
surrounding level and the cellar level therefore half underground,
with high-level windows above ground level. A drive is then sunk down
to the garage doors and steps up to the front and back doors as
    required.

Ours is actually on a hill so the low-side garage entrace is at ground
level, with steps up through the front garden to the also-ground level
front and (round the side) back doors.
Yes, we have a large terrace as well on the upper-ground level, with
additional rooms upstairs in what might be considered the attic. Works
    very well.

there are loads of "townhouses" in Enfield - garage, cloakroom and one
reception/bedroom on the ground floor; main living room/dining
room/kitchen on the 1st; bedrooms and bathroom on the 2nd. It's an
efficient use of space. But generally, they're modern properties with
    no character.
I like 3 storey houses in general.

  12. There's a house up the road from me just like that. Essentially a dormer
bungalow on concrete stilts with a ramp going up the side and leading to
the rear of what would be the ground floor normally. Underneath is lots
of parking space. Pretty neat, I think.

I'll take a pic and email you, if you'd like to see it.

  13. A basement garage needn't add a helluva lot to the overall cost, it
being unfinished concrete for the most part. It's just a big hole,
really. The main concern would be tankage in a high water table area -
flooded cars and bikes don't start too well - and sealing the basement
    under those circumstances is problematical.
Basements work well in hillside or well-drained locations where water
tables aren't so much of an issue.

    Not really.
I'm looking to do a straight swop to a 2 bed semi+garage no more than
15 years old. It's just about doable.

That would take me too far away from the office though.

I have considered it, especially after finding a new 4 bed detached
place in Atherstone for 200k the other day. But really being in
Solihull is pretty prefect location-wise. Easy to get to anywhere
else in the country by any mode of transport, Warwickshire countryside
1 mile in one direction, bright lights of Biringham city 1 mile in the
other, pleasant urban surroundings, 26 pubs and a couple of Michelin
    restuarants within walking distance.

I don't really know it, to be honest.
Sensible - living in a house is much better than living in a flat.

I dunno, I'll have to buy a lawn mower for a start. But yeah, the
flat was great for a single bloke who had his mates round a lot, not
quite so suitable for a married man who'll probably be starting a
family in a couple of years.

  19. Ideally, if I was doing this it would be on a decent plot, so I could
have the six-car, a normal-sized ground floor, and a hoofing big
upstairs with a master bedroom "suite" with retreat, walk-in closet,
    and massive en-suite shitter.
    Agreed.
