As someone who rarely experiences city traffic, the concept of lane
splitting is an unfamiliar one to me. Sure, I do it around where I live,
but when the only 2 lane road that we have is the highway through town,
and the freeway outside of town, with light traffic, lanesplitting is
    hardly a common occurance.

When I last rode to Melbourne, for a protest run through the Citylink
tunnels, I was on the freeway riding with another fellow, I was passed
on both sides by other riders who'd be lanesplitting like water through
a spaghetti strainer. Some of them cut it pretty close too. Even after
all this, those riders were about 10 seconds in front of me when we
    arrived at the meeting point.

To me, the "art" of lanesplitting seems to rely on the rider having an
implicit trust that the car/truck drivers around him won't do anything
silly, like changing lanes at the last minute, or drifting over, or
whatever. I'm not sure that I want to accept that level of risk when I'm
    riding. But that's me.

But I s'pose that my cautious riding style has seen me have one crash in
    28 years of road riding.

I have done some splitting of moving traffic, it's disturbingly easy and
    addictive.

And yes, it relies a lot on the people around you just going along in
their lanes like sheep. Or on you being able to realise the one that
won't. Although lanechanging only happens when there's space to change
into, if the traffic's nose to tail, they aren't moving across.

Pick time and place I suppose. There are times I'll do it, but the
incentive has to be strong, and the traffic suitable for the job.

But you were on a freeway and if you were 10 seconds behind them, it must have
been travelling at good speed... My trip home from work would take less than
15 minutes if there were no other cars on the road and all of the traffic
lights were green. Driving the car home at 7:30am takes me 30 minutes...
riding the bike and being at the front of the queue when traffic lights turn
green and the boom gates lift up saves me about 10 minutes on the trip. 17km
    - 22 traffic lights.

Is this still current? Recently, Vic road rules were changed and one of
the changes was that peds now have to give way to all vehicular traffic
    at roundabouts.

That's right, and that was my point. While all these other bikes were
lane splitting, we were not. We still got there around the same time as
them, and without the same risk taking.

Sure, I understand that filtering through slow moving or stationary
traffic's OK. I just have a problem with doing it at speed.

Personally I cannot see the point in gettting to work even 1 minute
earlier. That would be 1 more minute I could have spent on the bike.
Almost the same attitude getting home too.

  10. Hey I lane split all the time on my beemer. My handlebars are high enough to
clear mirrors, but sometimes the pistons get real close to tintop doors, I
get a bit worried about getting one piston caught up in a wheel arch, or
something. But what the hell, its all part of the fun of riding a bike in
    peakhour...
