Definitely not a clause I've ever signed (or would be likely to)

Well it seems like the gods have been smiling on fools then - I'm on
my third degree now, and I've never (to the best of my knowledge or
recollection) signed a clause of that nature.

I guess I'm lucky enough not to attend these dodgy victorian
    universities !

    True...

However, an arbitrary high risk group (or unusually high proportionate
group, such as baby boomers), who has members die in 1990 contributing to
18-27 age group may have members who die in 1998 contributing to the 28-37
age group and more still who die in 2006 contributing to the 38-47 age
group, thereby progressively skewing the statistics upward...

Which was really what my point was...

Analysing all fatality data from the past 18 years for the whole of
    Australia,
40.7% of motorcycle fatalities are single vehicle accidents.
50.4% of all other vehicle accidents are single vehicle accidents.

    Sorry mate quite the contrary:

    Student Handbook - Overall
    http://www.usyd.edu.au/fstudent/postgrad/study/pub/handbooks.shtml
    http://www.usyd.edu.au/fstudent/postgrad/study/pub/852_sections_12-14.pdf

The rights and responsibilities of students differ from those
of members of the University's general and academic staff.
The University specifically acknowledges that students own
any intellectual property that they create pursuant to their
studies unless they agree to some other arrangement. The
information below pertains solely to students. Students who
are also members of staff should ensure that they are aware
of the different provisions for staff and students. They can
then act in accordance with the provisions relevant to their
    circumstances.
There may be occasions when, in return for benefits, you
would like to assign some of your intellectual property to the
University. This may happen, for example, in cooperative
research ventures with industry, government, or the
community. It is important that all such agreements be
made to the mutual satisfaction of all of the parties. This is
most easily achieved if issues, such as ownership and the
distribution of benefits from the use of some intellectual
property, are resolved before the project is begun. Students
should note that a requirement to assign intellectual property
to another party in exchange for a scholarship may make that
    scholarship subject to income tax.

Rhetorical questions should be answered on principle (the principle
that it irritates the shit out the people who ask them); therefore:
    Per Se - Latin, "Of, in, or by itself or oneself;
intrinsically" (literally "of self" or "for self" IIRC)
