That would be the genuine Australian spelling if Govco had had a hand
in it. You remember them, they gave us the unique spelling of metre,
when the rest of the world was using meter, just in case we got
confused between a ruler and a speedo or a gas-meter.

Wrong! is the rest of the world America? the majority of the world
including the countries where the word originated from use metre

  5. The word is French and predates the eighteenth century French usage as a
standard unit of measurement. The 'Bureau International des Poids et
Mesures' (International Bureau of Weights and Measures), who are
responsible for maintining the definition of the metre, use metre when
writing in French and metre when writing in English. Australia adopted
the SI system in its entirety upon metrication, including all units and
    spellings.

The fact that the one unmetricated country on Earth chooses an aberrant
    spelling shouldn't surprise anyone.
