  3. In the early 80s I was working in Munich and you could visit beer halls
selling SS memorabilia and all the old SS marching songs were sung. I'm
    told it hasn't changes much.

    Verdigris says...
The allied re-enactment societies needed opposition for some mocked
battles, so someone had the bright idea of forming an Axis forces re-
enactment society. Unfortunately it appeared to attract the wrong type
of person, and more than one society has been known to have known
members of organisations such as Combat 18 amongst them.

From what Kev the Fascist says they have a surprising amount of genuine
kit, like 3 or 4 half-tracked troop carriers, m/bike sidecar combos,
huge numbers of replica weapons and more than their fair share of
'decommissioned' genuine firearms too. Genuine SS uniforms seem to be
the things they have trouble finding nowadays. Naturally, at the end of
WW2 no-one wanted to be seen in SS kit, so a lot of it got burnt and
    normal Wehrmacht kit was worn.

Emotional aspects aside, I've always thought the SS uniform was a striking
uniform in term of colour and design.

Not practical (except maybe at night), but it just looks 'powerful' to me -
Is one allowed to say that these days?

It was designed to look powerful and menacing. I think even post-war
    German uniforms have that effect.

  7. It was. It was extraordinarily effective. And at least one historian has
called the use of white gloves on ceremonial occasions "an inspired
    touch".

I've know a few people into various re-enactment stuff, from Vikings upto
English Civil War. Oh! and a couple who did American Civil War as well.
It's never really appealed to me but I guess I can understand their
interest in it. But WWII is still too recent, and the bad guys were so
bad that it has too many bad memories.

The earlier re-enactment stuff is a lot more physical, too: getting out
there and hitting people with large (mostly) blunt objects, rather than
    shooting at one another.

I didn't mean "USSR" markings, I meant the markings of the USSR, (which
    probably didn't include CCCP).

Maybe 10-20 years ago but not anymore it's all H&S now, more like a
    pantomime than a battle.

  12. Perhaps UKRM could form a Mods & Rockers re-enactment society where we
all take it in turns to kick the living shit out of DP?

Because i refuse to believe there is ever a situation where you have at
least a couple of options, even if they're extreme there's always a choice
