And the fact that there are fit young women there sometimes has
nothing to do with it? :)

petrolcan fascinated us all by saying...
    Yeah, there's a normal Gatso there not a Truvelo[1], but it doesn't
bother me cos I generally stick to 30 limits anyway. I also have a
forward facing Truvelo in Westoning on my way home, another 30 limit that
I stick to, and that's it.

[1] Shows how much notice I take of it. I don't speed down there cos it's
a 30 limit with a college right by the Gatso, and a bus stop close by
    too.

I wouldn't put it past this lot or the previous lot.

Than again, thinking about this from the "Yes Minister" perspective,
considering the amount of red tape and Whitehall job creation involved
in it all, a Monster Raving Looney/Natural Law coalition would
probably find itself being persuaded to the same conclusions.

Oooh, cheers for that. Should be safe enough on the bike though as it
sounds like they are them SPECS cameras.

    They do.
    TBH, I've never noticed them.

Are these verified? I notice a mistake further down that page: the
Maylands Ave camera is for southbound, not northbound traffic. Detail
errors like that make me suspicious.

Don't think they can't see you just because you ride on the pavement

    I haven't ridden on the pavement for...weeks.

Actually, I was wrong in my original claim, mind - there's two speed
cameras going down the A10 from Stamford Hill past Seven Sisters
    towards Tottenham.

You'd have to be some kind of muppet to get caught by them, mind, as

    a) they're very visible &
    b) the traffic is almost always running at about 10mph around there.

that's not strictly what "NP-Complete" means, you know...

Non-Polynomial complete ... i.e. a problem where the power to solve it
increases exponetially fast. I seem to recall that the most famous
one (or at least the one that sticks in my mind) was the travelling
salesman problem. I forget exactly how many cities it took before you
would run out of computational power (without using estoeric
mathematical theories that would be beyond a) Me and b) the
aforementioned town planners and comp.sci undergrads)

"Mountain" and "molehill" spring to mind here. All you've got to do is
put the detectors in rings every x miles from the centre of a city, and
along any ring road. With manchester you'd dot them around the M60, as
every road has to cross it at some point to get in/out. Then dot them
around various major routes, start and end of one-way systems. Either
the crim only drives around in one localised area or they'll have to be
detected when they try to leave the city by anything other than a dirt
    track.

Just get some town planner type[1] to look at a map and follow the above
    advice.

The way I'm thinking about it is that at first it won't be impossible to
avoid being detected, but the extra distance you'd have to drive to
dodge all the detectors on anything but the most trivial of journeys
would make it a lot of hassle. Mix in having to drive down Gatso
infested roads and making progress discreetly will be a nightmare.

[1] I only said that as they'd have something to gain from it, I daresay
anyone with a modicum of common sense could do it.

I think I did mention using common sense instead in my OP :)

I really hope Tone and Gordy don't read this ...

I wonder if they'll apply these gizmos to classic bikes and cars, the
    sort with old-fashioned numberplates.

I'm looking into a Microlight (almost no radar signature a civvie
radar will pick up consistently if you get a composite one (or was it
    a fabric and wood one) ... )

  18. A word of warning: most bus-lane cameras are in the buses themselves,
    not at the roadside.
