by the bloke in the 8x4 tractor unit reversing a five-axle (all
remote-steered by the banksman, it seemed) low loader out of a
building site at the top of Westferry Road tonight.

The trailer also has two axles at the front, which seemed unusual.

There's always an "oo" when it's tender.

    Although sometimes it's an "aaarrrggghhh!".

You only get an "oo" with Typhoo.

  18. Boring work mode on...

The 2 axles at the front of the trailer are called a EuroDolly. It
replaces the old fashioned 'jeep dolly' that was another smaller
trailer between the tractor and the main trailer used to take some of
the imposed load off the tractor.
Max. European axle weights are much less than max. UK axle weights so
most heavy haulage trailer manufacturers make a eurodolly trailer to
take account of this. Some modular trailer systems can be made up to
any number of axles / deck / neck combinations.
As for the steering, the banksman can overide the fifth wheel steering
mechanism with a hand held control. This normally requires a donkey
engine on the trailer to run the hydraulics.
As for the driving of such a big rig, well some of us can do it, and
some can't, but really it's down to practice.

By coincidence I saw a tractor/trailer combination like that this
evening, parked near the office [1]

It didn't have a digger on it.

[1] truckers use our road to stop overnight because it's near the
    services but free.

It had one of them, up at the front end.
Thinking about it later, he must have had some fun last night, as the
one bridge off the IOD he could use, was 50m behind him, after parking
    up.

Presumably he'd have to do a full lap to get back to it, but I'm not
sure the load would fit between some of the street furniture down
    Westferry Road.
