does anyone know the implications of importing a used bike, it's about
1 year old, from Northern Ireland to England

will there be any vat or import duty to pay, will I have to re-
register on a UK plate etc.?

    thanks

All you need is the NI V5. Send it off as normal.

If you don't have the V5, in either direction....... forget it, too
    much fucking hassle.

why the **** would you need to pay vat or import duty moving a vehicle
from one part of the UK to another?

Not quite. I had to take the NI registration docs to the LVLO at
Chelmsford to register your old GSXR1000 on the mainland, as the
Vehicle Licensing office in Coleraine and our own at Swansea do not
work together on this sort of thing. What is kept on the computer at
Coleraine is not kept at Swansea as well. The bike effectively needs to
be treated as a personal import and there's a lengthy form to be filled
out. You will be given the option of keeping the old NI plate or having
an age related mainland plate assigned to the vehicle.

There's no duty to be paid, but it's not as simple as sending the NI
reg doc off to Swansea and getting a new mainland V5 back. There are
notes on both NI docs and mainland V5s to this effect if you've ever
    bothered to read them.

I haven't. When I "imported" a bike from NI to England, I just never
bothered to update anything, and left the v5 with my parents who taxed
    it for me as necessary.

On a similar note, I still have a NI driving licence, with my parents
    address on it.

No you miss the point. There's an obscure by-law which states that if the
vehicle has been involved in an assasination attempt on either Gerry Adams
or Ian Paisley then it becomes a holy relic and must be placed on the vacant
plinth in Trafalgar Square where it can be venerated by those of us who
can't stand either of the whining shits. If it has been involved in an
attempt on both GA and IP then Nelson gets knocked off the top spot and the
    vehicle goes on the column.

Well yes there is an appropriate form to fill in but it is all
straightforward enough. If you don't have it you get into "Export
    Licences"

But it's not as simple as "send the NI doc off to Swansea". You do
actually have to queue up with the bottom feeders who need a tax disc
urgently, and the hordes of new immigrants[1] who want to transfer
their original licences into British ones.

[1] The office just outside Harrow was absolutely rammed with these
types when I had to go there.

"If only it was that easy"

Don't even get me started on the MOT and the portability thereof.
