Importing a bike

Discussion in 'Australian Motorcycles' started by The Ancient Geek, Jan 4, 2005.

  1. Greetings one and all. I'm currently in the UK but will be moving to Perth
on Thursday (landing Friday afternoon). I've been trying to sell my XJ900
Diversion but it's the wrong time of year and probably won't shift until
March. I decided to look into the possibility of bringing the bike over but
it seems to be quite an involved process with plenty of red tape. Are there
any companies offering a "one-stop" service to handle all aspects of
shipping a bike from the UK to Australia? I've done a fair amount of
searching on Google but haven't found any companies that might do this.

I've made arrangements with a biker friend here, so the bike can be garaged
and kept on sale until it sells, but if I could find a company to handle
everything for a fixed price, then it would give me another option and would
be one less thing to worry about.

Any advice would be most welcome!

in all honesty leave it there and get another bike here

Australia doesnt need another XJ900 ;)

seriously , it will be cheaper and less headaches leaving it in the UK
as you have already found out the red tape is a nightmare

  4. Cheers for that, it was just an idea I had while making all the final
arrangements here. The lack of anyone specialising in this sort of thing was
a pretty strong signal that it was probably a non-runner.

Looking on the bright side I get to go shopping for a new bike this weekend
    :)

  5. cheers - did you mean "locally" based on where I am /now/ or where I will be
at the end of the week? :)

  6. Thanks :)

Thanks to everyone who has responded, and to Dave Milligan for his email. It
confirmed my thoughts that it was a bad idea, and I'll concentrate on
selling the bike in the UK.

As an aside, unfortunately for Dave Milligan, I've just sold my old XS650SE
    for parts.

    Simply....DON'T.
A UK-sale will also yield more $$ than a sale over here
First you'll have to ship it across, that's easy.
It's gotta be meticulously clean before shipment.
Thern you'll need an engineers certificate over here (about $250-350).
Then you'll have to get a permit from Canberra.
A Roadworthy is the last and easiest chore before registration.
All that ONLY applies if you've been the owner of the bike for a certain
    minimum time (can't remember exactly how long/ 12 mths?AND if you're a
migrant and bring the vehicle as part of your personal belongings.

Different stuff applies in conjunction with different visas (tourist/ temp
    work etc etc)

    cheers
    pete

A Pom about to move to Australia asking a Pom who already moved to Australia
for a clarification on what is local. This is bound to get confusing :p
When you've regained consciousness after hearing how much it will cost you to
ship the bike to Australia, you'll know which local he's talking about.

  9. <Tubbs>Are you local?</Tubbs> (hoping that League of Gentlemen made it to
    Oz)

As I said in another reply, the 1% of my mind that was considering shipping
as an option has now been convinced otherwise :)

I guess the hunting for a replacement starts this weekend - my employer is
willing to advance up to $5K of my salary, to buy some transport. Hopefully
that'll get me a reliable commuter. Any recommendations on a suitable bike
for doing about 50Km per day in Perth, bearing in mind that I am tall and no
    lightweight :)

The only complication may be that it may need to be through a dealer as I
won't have cash, but the company will pay directly (something to do with
avoiding income tax on the advance I believe). Dealer implies more expensive
than private sale (at least that's how it works here).

This is a local newsgroup, for local people! (yup it did, but I don't think it
ever had a huge following. I think we got both seasons, but I don't think
    they were ever replayed.

Have a poke at http://www.autotrader.com.au which will give you an idea
of prices. The models should be similar to the UK.

5 grand isn't that much, so there won't be a lot of wiggle room.

you could still buy private , they just need to give you a bank cheque

but more like they will prob buy it as a company vehicle and claim the GST
    ????

look around stupid fools pay $2K for XJ900's here ;)

Isn't it? I've never spent that much on purchasing a bike. This decimal
    shit, not worth tuppence!

It's worth at least tuppence ha'penny! (jam extra)

One of the difficulties is that it doesn't snow here. Bikes don't
deteriorate in the weather, so they have a much longer lifespan.

Also, the population is smaller. THe UK has a lot of people, and they
go through a lot of bikes. Oz has only 19 million all up, and Perth
doesn't have many of those... so you don't have a lot of bikes bought in
    the first place.

  20. Hi Nev,

Aaahhh, but, the lure of the World Supers in April or the MotoGP in
October will be sufficient to get him over so we can deal with him
    here.

Besides, being a Pom he's bound to want to ride across the Nullabor so
he should be well softened up by the time he arrives.

    Easy meat!

    Kind regards
