Important lessons on Aprilia servicing

    In an unexpected fit of enthusiasm I decided to clean & grease the
    rear shock linkages on my Tuono. This in addition to an oil & filter
    change.

    The lesson I learned was: don't use a solvent spray gun on the needle
    roller bearings, cos the little bastards aren't caged.

    Much delicate fiddling in confined, slippery orififices ensued. I wish
    I could say it was more fun tha it was.

    Last year I did the shock linkage on the TT600R (built in Italy) and
    had similar but not the same problem. After disassembly I could not
    see any needle bearing cages but the grease seemed "dry" so I
    started to dig it out. It soon turned out that what I was removing was
    a rubber or plastic "cage" but I think I stopped before too much
    damage was done.
    Anyone seen something like that? Maybe common but new to me.

  3. ISTR that Jawa/CZ little end bearings were similarly uncaged. How many
    got dropped into crancases when people tried to remove the pistons is
    unrecorded.

    Yeah, ISTR that my Guzzi has cages something like that and possibly my
    YZ250 too.

    ISTR that my FZR600 had metal-caged rollers.
