Import Moto Bits

  1. Did you run a tape measure down each of them?
Does the front wheel appear unnaturally close to the header pipes?
Are there any dents in the header pipes?
Does the radiator sit straight on its mounts, and does it lack signs of
    something having hit it?

Your worry is that the steering head's been bent straight back.
A trustworthy source that should be. In any case, people have limped bent
bikes home to Sydney from the Snowy Mountains.
CBR250 or VT250 Spada items should do the job.
Did you roll it around, make sure the front disc isn't bent?
More details? How's the airbox come together on those things, and how's this
    crack go?
Pattern items. $12 each from a wrecker new, or $15 for a pair, used.
Did you see it, or do they mean the headlight's ok and should still be in
the same gutter in which they last saw it? Either way, asking for a round
headlight is a straightforward-enough request to make at a wrecker's.
    ~$30-$40.
This'll be a Hornet-only part. You might be able to get away with CBR250
instruments, but you'll still need Hornet bracketry to hold them (_maybe_the
Hornet 600 cluster will suit). While on that topic, how are all the
connectors and the wiring around there? Fixing up wiring looms with
sheared/stripped wires and smashed plastic connectors is never fun.
$500 off any eventual resale unless you spend a fair amount of money or
    effort fixing it up properly.
    CBR250 item might fit.
Gummed-up carbs, or shot piston rings. How are you to know?
That depends on the individual bike. Some of them_love_being taken apart for
rebores, new pistons and rings, valve lapping and valve seat regrinding.
Others, on the other hand, don't.

I usually vanish in a cloud of tyre smoke from hastily-applied brakes when I
pass a smashed bike sitting by the side of the road with a FOR (sorry, 4)
SALE sign on it, and, on the basis of what you're telling me, even I would
probably knock this one back. It sounds like it was ridden by a dickhead who
comes from a family of dickheads, and that's pretty much the final nail in
    the coffin.
Uncommon model, possible frame damage, uncertain engine condition, slackjaw
owner... let it remain his problem.

Tape measure be buggered, get a bit of offcut plate glass
and roll the fork stanchions along it. Of course, to do that
you'll need to remove them. 'In the field', as it were,
you might be better off using an engineer's square.

The naked eye isn't real good at this kind of thing. Have
a good look at the steering head, check that there's no sign
of tearing or ovalling around the headstem bearings.
.... as long as you don't mind it not being 100% original.
    Yeah, could be anything.
Well, it depends, the first thing I'd be doing is finding out
if it's really a CBR250R in sheep's clothing. If it is, engine
bits won't be hard to come by. Then I'd be checking the frame,
    thoroughly.
