    Hi,

    I moved to USA 6 years ago, and lived there for 4 years. During that time, I
    learnt to ride and got my USA license. I enjoyed it so much I went out and
    bought a bike Suzuki Katana 750 (GSX-750F).
    I moved back to the UK nearly 2 years ago and didnt want to leave/sell the
    bike in the USA, so I shipped it back.
    I got the import document (dunno what I did with it.. its in a file box
    somewhere).. but the point is, I havent registered it here in nearly 2 years
    as its been sitting in my garage doing nothing.
    I dont have a UK bike license ( I do have a full UK license), and they wont
    swap my license over from USA.. so I have to take the CBT from scratch....
    My question:

    I'm not riding the bike... and its not insured.... so how do I go about
    getting the Bike registered ? remember I dont have insurnce on it,... and
    right now I cant afford the insurance as I'm classed as a learner (I have no
    UK bike license).

    Any advice appreciated.

    Look here:
    http://www.dvla.gov.uk/vehicles/exptimpt.htm

    Get that rolling, while you work towards your full bike licence via
    Direct Access. http://www.dvla.gov.uk/drivers/rdmcycle.htm

    Talk to a local training school (Yellow Pages) and they will advise
    you.

    Somebody with more detailed info will probably be along in a minute.

    Bruce,

    What the hell are you on? (did u forget your medication today?)
    Did I ask you to spell check my post... errr NO. Does it lessen my request
    for advice... err... NO.
    Have you offered any constructive comments... errr.... NO.
    Who made you the the USENET police? Or is that your attempt at a sense of
    humour and welcoming a new user to this forum?
    How do you know I'm not an American? I didnt specifically say I was/wasnt,
    so your tone could be construed as offensive and racist (shame the FAQ
    doesnt say anything about that)

    Which bit of the FAQ are you refering to? The link to the latest FAQ <
    http://www.lepton.demon.co.uk/ukrmfaq.html > has a redirect error, so I
    guess I'll have to go with the one thats below....The charter points to
    Imperial College (Nice place, my Uncle is a Proffessor there.. yet doesnt
    have any links to this usenet forum.)
    Anyways.... I cant find what you are refering to... maybe you can be a bit
    more specific.
    Doesnt seem to mention anything about "Top Posting Replies". <- Never heard
    of that before in 20 years of using computers!!!\
    If youre wondering why I had 2 posts... my email client crashed while
    sending the 1st post, then decided to send a 2nd post... (go figure....
    Microsoft for ya!)
    So Bruce... if youre gonna hand out flippant remarks and police the NET, the
    least you could do (in your roll as "forum monitor" ) is provide some more
    info on the FAQ and more specifically explain what you mean by "top posting
    replies".

    Section 2 - About the uk.rec.motorcycles newsgroup.
    ~~~~~~~~~
    Q2.1: Is there a FAQ for this newsgroup?
    ----
    Yes. You are currently reading part of it. No more silly questions until
    you've read it all.
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Q2.2: What is uk.rec.motorcycles?
    ---- What can I post to uk.rec.motorcycles?
    Where is the charter?
    uk.rec.motorcycles is the main motorcycle news group for the
    United Kingdom. The news group was proposed by Ian Vincent
    <> The charter describes it as:
    An area for the discussion of anything concerning two wheeled and
    sidecar/trike transport within the UK. Also a board for the
    placing of requests and advertisements concerning motorcycle
    related issues and occasions relevant to Internet users in the
    United Kingdom.
    Adverts are allowed but only from individuals selling privately.
    Commercial advertising is forbidden.
    You can post anything else that meets the above description, with the
    exception of binaries. Binaries are not permitted but you can post
    pointers to binaries and post the binaries themselves to a binaries
    group.
    The charter in full can be found at sunsite.doc.ic.ac.uk
    Q2.4: What is the DOD?
    ---- What are those DOD#'s I've seen in peoples .sigs?
    Have you asked this before? Were you sorry you asked?
    (Hint: is your mailbox full?) Once a month, the DoD FAQ gets posted to
    rec.motorcycles. The DoD micro-faq gets posted monthly to the other
    rec.motorcycles.* groups. Occasionally it also gets posted to
    uk.rec.motorcycles.
    The DoD is the original usenet motorcycle club. To get the list of DoD
    members you can finger or send mail to:
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Q2.5: What is UKMC?
    ---- Is there a UKMC faq?
    I'd tell you what UKMC is, but then I'd have to kill you. There is
    no UKMC faq. There is however, a UKMC (c) faq. The (c) belongs to
    Ged Martin. See Q2.7 - "Who is Ged?" for more information.
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Q2.6: Hwo is Adny Wradwood?
    ---- Who or what is Andy Woodward?
    Some years ago, the University Of Aberystwyth started research into
    Artificial Intelligence. This resulted in ADNY - Automatic Dyslexic
    News Yobbo; a prolific news posting daemon. The Adny daemon continuously
    monitors rec.motorcycles and uk.rec.motorcycles. If the number of flames
    in the former or articles in the latter fall below a critical threshold,
    it auto responds. It has a large database of motorcycling knowledge which
    it uses to post flame bait, such as "My Hodna C90 gets me there as quickly
    as your Ducatti". Although the Adny daemon is capable of making 30 posts a
    day it's not perfect. It makes curious typographical errors, usually
    transposing two letters in a word. The chance of a mistake is in direct
    proportion to the controversy of the sentence. There are records of up
    to 3 consecutive words being mangled. If you see more please post to the
    newsgroup.
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Q2.7: Who is Ged?
    ----
    Ged is the author of the UKMC FAQ. Anybody can ask Ged about his FAQ. One
    or two people have even received answers. If you catch him on a good day
    he might mail it to you. Try:
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Q2.8: Why are there so few straight answers in the faq?
    ----
    The faq is not intended to answer all questions directly. Some attempts
    are made to save you time and effort, but it is mainly intended to
    be a collection of pointers to other information sources.
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Q2.9: Why doesn't the faq come out on the first of the month like in
    ---- most newsgroups?
    Why is the posting of the faq so haphazard?
    I wish the faq did come out on the first, like it's supposed to.
    Unfortunately, the PC on which the faq is kept has a faulty CMOS clock.
    The fault causes the computer to set to a random date and time whenever
    it is switched on. The clock chip also has a few bent pins, which cause
    it to rise out of it's socket as it warms up. Sometimes, I knock it back
    down with a handy claw hammer but by then the faq has been auto-posted.
    Most of the time the posting date is wrong by thousands of years. Your
    news reader then expires the article before you get to see it.
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Q4.4: What is the risk of my bike being stolen?
    ----- How do I stop thieves from taking my bike?
    In the UK hundreds of motorcycles are stolen every year. It is not just
    bikes with a high value, to a casual thief any bike will do. In 1995 the
    4 most stolen types of bikes were all 125cc's. This would seem to indicate
    that owners of smaller bikes are not as aware of the risks as they should
    be.
    Owners of more desirable bikes face additional risks. The professional
    thief wants valuable bikes and is much more difficult to deter. If he
    really wants your bike then he'll get it. Your job is to make it so
    risky and difficult that he'll pick an easier target.
    Some of the security ideas given in Q4.5 and may help you to keep
    your pride and joy out of the hands of scumbags.
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Q4.5: What sort of security chain/lock should I get for my bike?
    -----
    Wheel locks are difficult for thieves to remove yet easy to ride with.
    They can be used on front and rear wheels.
    If you buy a chain get one longer than 36" or you'll have difficulty
    chaining a wheel to anything. Get one with a toughened plastic sleeve
    so it won't scratch painted wheel rims.
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Q4.6: Where can I get more info on preventing my bike from being stolen?
    ----
    The UK government runs a web site with some good (and some obvious)
    crime prevention advice. Much of it applies to bikes:
    http: //www.car.crime-prevention.org.uk
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Q4.7: What are GATSOs?
    ---- How do speed cameras work?

    GATSO is a type of speed camera. There are other manufacturers of speed
    cameras but GATSO is the most widely used in the UK.

    The purpose of speed cameras is to prevent accidents by slowing traffic.
    When speed cameras are installed warnings signs are usually placed on the
    road to encourage traffic to slow down.

    Each camera has a trigger speed. If a vehicle is travelling faster
    than the trigger speed the camera takes a flash photograph. In newly
    installed GATSO boxes the trigger speed is usually at least 20mph above
    the speed limit. This prevents the entire roll of film being wasted in
    the first morning. Often no film is loaded into the camera until weeks
    after the installation. Once regular commuters have learned about the
    cameras and slowed down accordingly, the cameras will be loaded with film
    and the trigger speed adjusted.

    Only one in 3 GATSO housings actually incorporate a camera. Cameras are
    moved from location to location to police speeding blackspots.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Q4.8: Where can I find a list of all GATSO speed cameras?
    ----
    You can't. Even if you could, it wouldn't be as useful as you might think,
    for the reasons given in Q4.8. You can buy an out of date book listing
    camera locations in London.

    There has been talk in the newsgroup of a web based national gatso
    database. Gathering up-to-date, reliable data about gatso's is an almost
    impossible task; it remains to be seen whether anything will come of this.
    There is a partial list of GATSO's below; and a UK page at:

    http://www.speedtrap.com/speedtrap/england.html
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    The information below was posted to the newsgroup. Thanks to the
    observant contributors who made this available:
    A3 westbound from Clapham to M25:
    4 cameras: first one 300 yards after the Roehampton lane junction, just
    before Kingston; second about 1 mile beyond Kingston turnoff (Robin
    Hood Roundabout) at the foot of the ramp up to the raised section of the
    A3; third about 1 mile further on at the foot of the ramp down from the
    raised section; fourth (and last) on the crest of the rise (not visible
    from a distance) at the last intersection (Tolworth) before the open road.
    A3 eastbound from M25 to Clapham:
    4 cameras: first one as the A3 narrows from 3 lanes to 2, before you get
    to the built up area; second on a left hand bend about 2 miles further on;
    third as you hit the 40mph limit (road narrows from 3 lanes to 2 again)
    just before the Robin Hood Roundabout; last one as the road narrows to 1
    lane after the Wimbledon turnoff just before Wandsworth (start of the
    Valley of Death!)
    M25 junctions 10 to 13:
    One at every single gantry over the road.
    The A417 from Cirencester to Swindon:
    Has a couple of gatso's on the dual carriageway just outside Ciren,
    and another as you pass thro' Latton Village.
    Between M25 clockwise (north bound) and the M4 Westbound)
    The slip road is a nice, wide, fast left hander and it's really easy
    to do 90+ round it in relative safety (obviously not during rush hour) but
    on the left just after the road splits.
    The A316 between the Twickenham roundabout and the next one going West
    On the A4 going towards Camberley.
    On the A41 2 miles from Chester (on the Whitchurch side).
    Just ignore him - he gets a bit tetchy occasionally - I think it was
    the US spelling of license, as opposed to licence, that got him.
    OTOH
    <snip rattle launch and quoting of hundreds of lines of FAQ etc.>
    What the **** do you think you're doing, trying to jam the internet?
    I'd imagine he's refering (sic) to the link alluded to in the regular
    post which has the Subject: field set to "The UKRM FAQ", which I shall
    reproduce here for you since, despite your claimed 20 years in
    computers you seem unable to perform the most basic of searches:
    http://www.ukrm.net/faq/ukrmscbt.html
    I commend it, and the other web pages to which the FAQ refers, to your
    attention.
    Boy, you really know how to get on with people and form a relationship
    don't you ? Living in the states has rubbed off on you.
    I think any chance of help has flown out of the window with your rattle.
