"The judge said: "He went fast for a short time only on a straight road
with excellent visibility. I have to rule whether speed alone can be the
basis of a dangerous driving case. I reach the conclusion that it cannot."

We *need more judges like this

And a surprisingly frank admission that the Royal Society for the Prevention
of Accidents don't know what dangerous driving is:

"However The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents slammed the
decision saying: "If driving at 150mph isn't dangerous driving we don't
    know what is."

I would suggest dangerous driving is driving which is, er, dangerous.
With excellent visibility on a straight road, why is travelling at 150mph
more dangerous than at 70mph? There is an increased chance of death
_if_ a collision were to occur, but I don't see a significantly increased
risk of crashing. Even racing accidents tend not to happen on straights
    with no other vehicles...

I also think there's more to it than they're telling us - a Boxter tops
out at only a handful of MPH more than that, so he must have had one
hell of a long run-up to reach that speed.....

Sounds like the reading on the hairdryer could well be suspect.

Provided she hangs him for being uninsured, I'd agree.

Actually, this isn't a new conclusion, they do have case history to work
to. I actually proved a TP was speeding when our car got hit while Laura
was driving. The insurers set the blame on her, stating that speeding in
itself was not dangerous driving, and that the onus is on the person
giving way to make sure the road is clear.

  11. I got presented with 3 points and a 60 quid fine allegedly doing 65mph in
a 30. Never lend your bike to someone. Even for a short time.

It is /potentially/ more dangerous, without a doubt. An accident is
more likely to happen, & be more serious, should something unexpected
occur. But the judge is bang on imo.

If I may play devil's advocate for a moment....

Firstly, this lad took the car and knowingly drove it without insurance.

Secondly, according to BBC Jargon Buster, "Dangerous Driving" is defined as
    follows:
"Dangerous driving refers to when a person drives a motor vehicle in a way
that falls well below what is expected of a competent and careful driver"

So, if he had been caught driving it in a reasonable manner, then I agree,
dangerous driving does not really come into it, although he should be hung
drawn and quartered for driving without insurance.

However, to take the car, knowingly uninsured, and drive it at 150mph,
particularly on a non-motorway seems to me to be reckless in the extreme, as
any loss of control at such a speed will surely end up a major incident.
So, does the above description of Dangerous Driving apply to this lad's
    apparent recklessness and driving manner?

    <PAUSE FOR THOUGHT>

Okay, so had he been insured and caught at 150mph, would he still be
reckless? (assuming one agrees that driving uninsured at 150mph is
reckless), and should this make any difference as to whether he's done for
    DD or not.

    Dunno, I need more caffeine.

  19. The police are allowed to drive at 150mph knowingly uninsured, so that
    is not reckless.
