I rather like the RSV in traffic - it's narrow, very well balanced and fast
enough to zip in to any spaces you damn well want.

AOL - it was after about three or four months of despatching that it occured
to me that for the first time I was completely in control of my bike. I
could make it do exactly what I wanted, when I wanted. And the only rule I
adhered to was that I had to be absolutely certain in the split second I
made a decision and then on that basis anything was permissible. But if I
    wasn't sure I didn't IYSWIM.

To me it was physics. Or a videogame. The object was to get to a destination
as (relatively) safely and as quickly as possible. I remember a couple of
jobs in particular. One was a drop from BBC TV Centre in Shepherd Bush to
Citibank at London Bridge. The job was apparently desperately urgent 'cos
the person was leaving on a plane at so and so time. I gave it everything
and made it in around 12 minutes - everything opened up for me, the lights
the traffic. Even the light rain didn't slow me down. When I got there the
guy in reception opened the package and it was a fucking Eastenders mug! I
told him I'd busted a gut to get there and he promised to lose the mug in
    their postal system :)

But I absolutely *loved* the blast across London.

    The good old days.

    I wish you hadn't bred[1].

[1] Actually, that's true on a number of levels.

That was after I'd bred (prototype). I'd only just started posting here
    when first 'un was born.

    OK, strike one level.

    My statement stands.

  10. I remember something similar - having to get a test-tube baby embryo (of
all things) from Heathrow to a clinic in Harley Street in something like
30 minutes - I forget now. Manic, utterly manic.

  11. I remember one of our lot who was given a package to go to the Gatwick
Trading Estate, and after God knows how long wandering around the
environs of Crawley, he called in, and was told it was in Coventry.

It was, too, and it was on the envelope, and the clueless **** hadn't
read far enough down the address.

I've probably told this before, but I once had a pickup from Stevenage
to go to an address "just off Suffolk street in London".

A swift perusal of the A-Z revealed Suffolk Street in E7. Off I
trundled, and up and down I went. No sign of the address.

A more careful perusal of the A-Z revealed another Suffolk Street in
    SW1. ****!

Across town. More trundling. No sign. Bollocks.

Eventually I called the punter. "I can't find it!".

    "It's off suffolk Street".
    "No, it isn't."
"I've been there. It's just off Suffolk Street!"
    <listens carefully>
    "Spell 'Suffolk'"
"Ess Oh Ewe Tee Haitch Double-ewe Aye Arh Kay, Suvvark."
    "Thanks, it'll be there soon..."

    Always get a postcode, folks...

  16. Point of order: Nicholsons had/has the one-way streets marked with
arrows. A-Z used a bold line on the side of the street.

I always found Nicholsons easier to use.

(It's utterly tragic that I remember things like that after 25 years)
