Just talked to my friend in the Houston area. She said that only a
million or so homes and businesses are without power now. She's still
one of them but at least her phone service is back up and with a
generator, she can power up her computer and get online. She's
confident that with the help of power companies from all over the US,
she and the others will have power soon.

As for damage to her place, storage building is a complete loss
(including most everything in it), her back privacy fence was
flattened by the neighbors big pine trees (which ended up in her yard)
and some minor damage to the house. I am assuming all of her vehicles
were tucked inside the garage. I forgot to ask.
She's on higher ground, so her house didn't get flooded.

She told me that a bunch of men (of Mexican descent) showed up out of
nowhere and in 2 hours, had the trees in her back yard all cut up and
carried away. Those men were a blessing and she is very grateful for
    their act of kindness.

To Louie & the Sheriff, Morgan Kane, Mark and others that know her,
she sends her regards and love.

My sister just got power last night. Probably gotta go help her cut up a
chinaberry tree this weekend. I just finished mowing all the sticks in
my yard. The shed I built a few years ago has now held up thru Rita and
Ike. Apparently I build a helluva shed. The tin didn't even fly off the
roof. Which is more than I can say about 6 or 7 of the shingles on my
roof. Debating on a DIY metal roof system. Still too damned hot to be on
    the roof though.

Don't forget "Ride to the River" at Apache Pass rally
    this weekend.
Put a cream colored metal roof (had contractor install,
I don't do roofs) on my place years back and the
lighter color dropped my A/C bill about 20% in the
    summers. YMMV

That's sort of what I'm hoping for, I've got a really low roof, and I'm
hoping a lighter color and the newly created dead air space between the
old roof and the new would help the AC.

Good to know that you have minimal damage.
Metal roofs are really the way to go. Expensive (now) at installation
    but well worth it.

Coupla rolls of aluminum foil and some duct tape, how expensive can it be?

At the time I had the new roof done I was gainfully
employed so I could write the check without choking. I
mainly considered the fact that the next time I needed
a shingle roof in 25 years or less I would be retired
and money would probably be scarce. I am now retired,
money IS scarce but lacking some kind of storm damage
the metal roof with the baked on finish will outlast me .
    YMMV

    I can relate.
Try keeping up with 2 households (and all the bills of 2 households).
