Ignition control module problem - 1982 Yamaha XS400RJ Seca

Discussion in 'Motorbike Technical Discussion' started by Jeremy Holland, Oct 4, 2003.

  1. I can't start my bike. I don't have a lot of skill when it comes to
dealing with bikes, but I think I've traced the root of my problem back the
the ignition control module. Here is what happens.

When I pull a spark plug to check for spark, I get one spark when I hit the
starter, then no more. When I turn the key off I get a second spark. Does
anyone have any ideas if my problem is the ignition control module or is it
something else? I hope it is something else because those control modules
are expensive and this bike is just about worthless right now. Thanks for
    any help.

For a bike that old I'd first check for points and condenser. It is possible the points are closed
up, an that turning off the ignition collapses the field through the coil giving you a spark.I'm
sure the '81 model had points dunno about the '82??

  3. The Seca model, if that's the monoshock model, is electronic ignition.
