Obscuring your License plate in NSW is a $76 fine. (Simple rotating of rego
    label)
This is equivilent to 26 Sydney Harbour tolls. (roughly 5 working weeks).
An obscured license plate also makes you to speed cameras irrelevant.
I am on week 5 of my experiment and I am so far even money. As of next week
    I will be ahead.

Use this information how you see fit :)

  2. I think this was changed recently for just that very reason. $76 was
otherwise cheap insurance for any speed camera. Too cheap.

Not since yesterday it hasn't. The same bike cop was waiting for me today
though, so I might have to give it a rest for a few weeks.

It sucks that you guys have to pay tolls. I see one problem with your idea,
if allot of people start following your idea and word spreads the cops will
raise the fine to something more suitable. If that doesn't work it will
give the cops a reason to introduce front numberplates and bugs.

  5. Nice theory, but.....

If you get pulled up with an obscured number plate, the cop is _not_ going
    to be nice.

They will hit you with everything they can throw at you. And I would be
surprised if there wasn't easily $2000 wrong with your riding/bike.

lol! I love a good science experiment...
I wonder how much of a beating your insurance would cop if you had a
bundle of fines for no numberplate racked up...

I hope you drive a common colour/type of car.

Would be slightly obvious if you were running red lights, speeding and not
paying the bridge toll in your Ferrari Enzo. :)

Until you get done by a mobile speed camera and you get your speeding
fine AND the $76 fine on top of it.

    well done.

Agree that it is not worth doing on a daily basis.

However, it you are touring thru Victoria it is definitely worth
    considering

I must admit I'm always surprised that you southerners seem to get away
    with this rego-label-over-the-'plate caper.
No one tries it in Brisneyland as I'm sure any copper you passed would
    hammer you instantly!

I can answer that. If I wanted to insure my $7000 old Mazdabater car I was
quoted $1000! I didn't even bother asking how much for the CBR!

I have no choice. They only built one road south. (Spit road)

I don't think we have mobile speed cameras in these parts. At least I've
never seen one in the 7 years I've been living here. They do have the odd
radar guy, but I reckon I could out-run* a stationary cop car quite easily
    :)

*Not advocating high speed chases at all, I just know a lot laneways in my
neighbourhood where cars won't fit. And since it's not illegal to run from
the cops, as long as you do it in a civil manner, you should be right,
    right?

Not sure. There is no place on the ticket for demerit points. I guess that
    comes in the mail?

I believe you are talking crap,

I obscure part of one letter on my plate. I've been stopped 5 times, seen by
lots of police both in cars and on foot, and only been booked twice riding
300 kays a week for the last five years.

Some cops treat it like a joke. One pair pulled me over once and told me to
uncover the plate if I was heading up the Old Road (Syd) "cause the Highways
guys are up there today and they'll probably grab you".

Another time at a random breath test the cop looked at my plate and said
"you know that's illegal, come on, uncover it mate."

Another time a bike copped caught me travelling slowly (first gear) in the
break down lane in pouring rain on Gore Hill Freeway and screamed at me "fix
your fucking plate NOW" but didn't bother doing anything else.

And two guys have pulled me over and actually booked me. I would estimate
that probably 50 or more cops have seen me. Probably more.

In my opinions what you are saying is crap. Like the original guy said,
unless you are in a high risk situation (ie the Old Road) then the $76/no
    points is a bargain.
