"Would you sleep with someone for a million pounds?"

"Well yes I guess I would"

"Would you sleep with me for twenty quid?"

"Of course not, what kind of girl do you think I am?"

"We've already established that, now we're just haggling over the price."

For a good 40 minutes by the time you posted that, yes!

The Ukrainian Limp Bizkit-a-likes did it for me. The frontman of a
band from a former Soviet state wearing a Che Guevara tshirt. Who
says foreigners don't do irony! ;)

Well - those arrested at Menwith, at the arms fair last year

against what amounts to a handful of people arrested for "real" terrorist
    activities[/QUOTE]

That's not a source. An online one would do, in the interests of
understanding how these arrests are different to the hundreds of others that
occur at Menwith or any other military base.

"Tell that to the Jews" would have been more succinct. There's a letter in
this week's New Scientist which points out that one of the reasons the Nazis
were able to round up Jews, Gypsies, Slavs and other genetic trash so
efficiently was because the German civil service had everybody on file, down
    to the last detail.

Are you reading the stuff I type? Again, I'm not saying that ID cards in
themselves are the doorway to a totalitarian state, I'm saying that combined
with other creeping restrictions on civil liberties they represent a bad
trend that has to be stopped somewhere. To me ID cards are a good point to
try and stop things from going any further.
Proverbially you'll be doing nothing, then.
Oh, it's just that when you say things like "politicians are business'
bitches" and "it's not about you, it's never about you" that makes it sound,
you know, pretty black and white.
And what? If we introduced ID cards in the UK this situation would change?
As far as I can see the paragraph above, while worthy of a debate, has no
    bearing what-so-ever on this one.

  16. When the Germans marched into Holland in their take over (I'm talking
WW2 not the yearly holiday invasion), they went fist to the registration
offices and from the information there rounded up all the
    "Undesirables".

The Dutch ideas on registration changed after that.

We could easily strike the first 2 sentences out. We know you think ID cards
are a good and "clear" point to try and stop things going further and what I
have been trying to establish is /why/ you think that. All I've read so far
is examples of Nazi Germany and the holocaust and an imagined future state
where we'll all be locked up for being terrorists if we default on a
mortgagte payment or something. Oh and some protesters that breached a
military base and apparently caused some surprise that they were arrested.
But the full report of that is pending.
    What does /that/ mean?
Oh, I see! We're at the childish stage of the argument! Sorry, didn't
realise. You can make broad statements about the future dismantling of
democracy and the prospect of us all becoming terrorists if the gubmint
feels like it but I'm not allowed to paraphrase John Dewey, one of the most
respected modern day philosophers to consider the unsavourey relationship
    between that gubmint and business.
Well I don't think you can see very far then. If I introduce an example to
counter an aspect of your debate then it has bearing. I'm sorry if you have
a short memory but I would be doing you an injustice not to address your
points as they come up. Read it again, and not just the bit you quoted, but
also the bit about keeping the proles happy.

You need to calm down a bit and get a grip. I'm willing to be persuaded that
ID cards are an insinuative attempt to reduce our liberties and should be
stopped but it's going to take more than tabloid-like scaremongering and
    hysterical portents.

  19. If you don't think the example I posted - which scored some nods of
agreement from others - to the effect that failure to produce on
(unreasonable) demand *will* result in the owner being mistreated, then
    I'm sorry.

Are you old enough to remember how the now-discredited "sus" law was
    misused?

Well I'm sorry in return if you measure the validity of your arguments on
the number of "nods of agreement" in ukrm :p

I've no doubt that those members of our beloved police force who currently
abuse and torture minorities, or in fact anyone they don't like, will
continue to do so with or without the adoption of the ID card. It's hardly
going to go away because we don't carry ID cards.
No, but I'm aware of it. This is a shittily rascist country which
perpetuates the constant cycle of repression and vicitmisation; this is not
a new phenomenon. Have you considered it might make life a little more
tolerable for non-whites if they DO carry ID cards? Less of a grey area in
their lives for the nasty fuckers to exploit? Why isn't that a possiblity?
