It was cruelty that was on the agenda and not need though.

Driven shoots seem similarly barbaric to me.

We've only had the hunt here once about 25 years ago. When they were
told to keep off they didn't come back.

Of course, a tenant farmer would be in a completely different position.

  4. And did you hear on today's news that on 1.1.2006 *every* offence will
suddenly and miraculously become an arrestable offence? God knows how they
managed to slip that quietly past Parliament. Dropping litter, parking on a
yellow-line, getting lippy with Plod - no matter how trivial, it will render
you liable to arrest. I assume that, once arrested, you can then be
    forcibly finger-printed and/or DNA'd.

No doubt the justification for this lunacy is 'the fight against terrorism'.
Christ, what a truly appalling regime to be living under ...

  6. Aha, here it is:

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/4564600.stm

I just don't have the vocabulary to describe my utter disgust and
disillusion. This whole government, and this wretched apology for a prime
minister, really should be stood against a wall for the people to throw
rocks at them until they die. Then their ridiculous grinning heads should
be impaled above Traitors' Gate for the ravens to feast upon their sightless
eyeballs. Gods, what lasting damage they have inflicted on the country, and
    the quality of life.

After the restoration of Charles II [and I am no monarchist], Cromwell's
corpse was dug up, hanged, dawn and quartered and his head bunged on a spike
outside Westminster Abbey. If and when we ever manage a return to
reasonable and enlightened government, Tony Bliar deserves no better.

  7. Jesus H Fucking Christ. Well, I didn't vote for the cunts.
    Fairly put.

Ms Blears said: "We need to maintain a crucial balance between the
powers of the police and the rights of the individual."

    Like ****.

What I want to know, also, is why the so-called opposition is such crap.
Hell, if I were in oppositioon, and the government proposed such
draconian powers, I'd be screaming against it. But no, they've kept
quiet. "The Conservatives have indicated they will be closely monitoring
the effect of the new powers." So they'll do nothing.

But the Tories are crap, basically.

  8. This was shoved through by Blind Pew, during his brief incumbency at the
Home Office. Be fair, in '03 and '04 the Tories were in complete disarray,
and seemed to be spiralling down history's plug-hole. Anyway, you always
rather expect the Tories to be illiberal; it's their job. Why didn't the
LibDems make any noise about it, though?

Let's see if the Thunderer has the balls and/or principle to publish the
letter I've just written. Why don't you knock one out ... so to speak! We
can make a *cause* of it.

    probably too soon....

  10. Yes, I usually spot them as they go through but haven't been paying much
attention recently, having been on taxi-driver duty collecting and
repatriating ancient rellies from/to distant parts of the realm.

Blair is only one vote in the three hundred and odd it takes for
legislation to pass the commons. Blame equally, the whole of the
Parliamentary Labour Party for doing it and the Tories for letting them,
No blame attaches to the libdems of course, they need pity not blame.

  12. Bliar is gang-leader, and with the glory comes the responsibility. Since
HD&Q'ing the lot of them would get both repetitive and messy, let's do Bliar
alone ... oh, and Blind Pew ... and Hazel Blears ... and Child-Catcher Straw
.... and ... and ... and ... Legislation originates at Cabinet level, is
rubber-stamped by the yes-men of the PLP and is ineptly and infrequently
opposed by the Tories. LibDems can often be relied upon to punch
impressively above their weight when matters of individual liberties are at
stake, and I wonder why they have been so quiet about all this.

    Don't forget party conference.

Interesting statement that one, as it is a question I have asked myself
a few times. Media conspiracy to keep them looking foolish probably.
Although I would argue a bit about punching above weight as that implies
they are actually in the ring in the first place.

  14. The same party conference that sat and watched as the Rentathug gorillas
chucked old Walter Wolfgang out for daring to shout "Rubbish" at the
    Childcatcher!
They are very good at making noise on civil rights issues, although perhaps
the noise they make these days is just to cover the clanking of Kennedy's
    whisky-bottles.

The very one. Writing on the wall and all that shit. But don't forget
the others held up and down the kingdom around the same time.

I dunno. With nu labour now positioning itself in a part of the
political spectrum where my vote doesn't get cast I am shopping around
for a new focus of my loyalties, the libdems haven't got it at the
    moment.

In the sound bite war I am hearing words that better suit my prejudices
from the tories. Although I am not really that surprised because there
is a streak of downright Wesleyan Christian practical morality running
through the left wing of their history that the whole of the party can
    claim as it's own.

Agree completely it's a *horrible* piece of legislation. However I
disagree that it's the Tories job to be illiberal. I thought they were
the party that was for the individual and didn't (used to) believe there
was any such thing as community.
    Good question.

  19. Yeah well, I shoulda oughta writ 'job' in inverted commas. It's what they
are seen as being best at. It's the cliché perception of the Tories as the
hang-em, flog-em, deport-em policeman's friend party of our dear old friend
Laura Norder. They have been completely supine recently, and allowed Labour
to get away with terrible incursions on our ancient liberties. David Davis
was, at least, vehemently anti ID cards, and remains Shadow Home Secretary,
but gawd knows what future policy will be under Lt-Cdr Data.
