Riding my Sprint 900 home last week, heard a nasty thump from the engine
followed by a deep rattle from the crank case.

Rode into a garage gradually losing power as I went.

Carole Nash sent me a tow truck with a bloke who was very friendly but knew
nothing about bikes so just strapped my bike to his truck and dragged me
    home.

It now turns over (just) but I don't want to damage anything else by running
the engine with the plugs in.

I fear the worst (damaged pistons / conrod) but basically don't know wtf I
am doing. Cant afford garage prices so am going to have to learn as I fix.
    Any suggestions / encouraging comments?

My first thought was a compression test to see if all three cylinders were
    giving the same reading.

To make things worse. I commute 60miles to work each day so had planned to
get my old 125 Superdream running whilst I worked on the Triumph. Having
spent the weekend getting the old beast running again it sounds like a tank
and spews white smoke everywhere at high revs. There doesn't seem much point
stripping the old Honda so that I can then strip the Triumph. ****!

Anyone fancy lending me a bike?

If I'm ever in the (admittedly unlikely) position of being able to do
you some genuine harm, I shall.

All very well but this does not aid me in my quest to get back on the road.
