Very sorry to hear about the higgs project/job, all I can offer on the
positive side is the thanks I have been meaning to send for a week now -
that Velcro did the job, problem solved, person is delighted (1).

Being a lapsed agnostic I cannot comment on any Great Plan for the Universe,
or how that may affect you, I have a stack of platitudes in my desk drawer
(the Chinese symbol for crisis is the same as for opportunity etc), but you
will have heard them all by now anyway.

I do however believe that maintaining a sense of humour is essential in a
universe as ridiculous as this one.

    Regards

    Mike

    (1) Part of the reason for the delay was necessity of visit to a client in
Layton Hospital, 'No problem Mike, the missus'll give you a lift'. (2)

I had wondered about all the trophies in the cabinet, turns out they were
hers, for rally driving, and she cannot 'turn it off'. I vaguely recall
signs whizzing past on the lines of '350 collisions here in the last three
years', which would not have been so bad had we not been passing them at eye
    level.

    (2) Frodsham in Cheshire is a nice place to live (bar the flying rally
drivers) with a selection of fine country pubs and there is a nuclear
accelerator of some description in the vicinity, cannot for the life of me
remember enough to gurgle it for details but you probably know all about it.
On the http://www.sciencefile.org physics forum the moderator appears to
have some connection (for one thing they live in Frodsham) so might be worth
checking if (a) you wish to remain in the UK and (b) you fancy accelerating
    particles for a living.

Reminds me of the Mad Scientist who built a machine that could destroy the
universe instantly, he wasn't sure it would work so he poured himseff a
stiff ginger beer and turned it on. He never did find out if it worked.

  13. ...then hopefully the third is the failed kitchen fluorescent
light tube I just replaced after it got all flickery last night. I seemed
to have got the last one in the store (Focus) so I was terribly worried
about breaking it as I shopped in eTcso and brought it home.

In such cases, I've always asked it to go back to roughly where I'd left
off, and never mind the few that get lost in the cracks.
Argh. I know what that's like, and it's not nice.

Well I hope that purged it!
Jolly bad news about the job, any chance of staying involved with CERN from
another angle? I enjoyed the little snippets and was rather hoping to see
you make the most significant ever UKRM post.

  16. Meet oo.
Yes. I haven't even started to tap the Old Boys' (as it were...)
network yet. Possibly slim pickings in the UK, CMS is only Brunel,
Imperial, Bristol and Rutherford Appleton Labs, whereas Atlas has most of
the other Physics departments in their collaboration. emails have been flying
over the weekend, so I'm waiting for the US to wake up late this afternoon
to see if there's any reaction.
