  1. Aawww, Nick, why didn't you tell me about these fantasies before?

    Bummer.
If'n you fancy a wbo jetting round t' whirled fixing huge motor
drives, I know where there are 4 going. No chance of getting
    published, or famous, mind.

IRTA 'revolving leotard' and the image was no less disturbing. Maybe
    slightly more so.

  4. Thanks, I'll save that for posteriority. I've had some official
events where I've done "outreach" but I don't think I've had more success
educating the public than on these two newsgroups. Hard to quantify for a
performance review, thobut... (Especially if the reviewers don't ride
    motorcycle sheds!)

Arse indeed. That's more than a bit shit, Ivan. Elly's employers have
suffered cuts and so will dispense with her services in March, but
October's a bit close to the bone, old man!

I'm sure something will turn up: perhaps not Bosun-shaped, but
    something, eh?

Yebbut, it's an exceedingly fine line between yer "eccentric" scientist,
as is all charming and amusing and whatnot, and yer actual "mad"
scientist, as wants to genetically modify the ozone layer using a black
hole with a mouse's ear growing on it.

And I, for one, cannot state with certainty which side of the
    aforementioned line our Doctor falls.

    Not with certainty, I can't.

  11. Yah, I'll survive. Savings enough for several years.
There are interesting jobs on the websites I've visted so far
(tho' Oxford is pushing it as a commute). There's a meeting of my old
field of expertise in Oxon in Sept, so I might try to activate the Old
    Boys' Network there.

    I'm not panicking yet.

Ah, the OBN. That's the way forward, Ivan.
Neither should you. It'll all turn out for the best, as my old Granny
used to tell me - excepting the mangle incident, but we never mentioned
    that, never.

  13. Well, no, grannies and mangles never did go well together. The one
time gramps got something caught in the mangle, well that was altogether
    eyewateringly different!

  15. If it is any help, a mate of mine here works for a company that finds
work for engineers. www.enginuitypeople.com.au I'm about to go out to
the pub with him (wot with it being night-time over here) and happy to
pass on recommendations if you want.

  16. Thanks, Kev. I've dropped a line to a good friend who just happens
to be head of the Physics Dept at Newcastle; I'll see what comes out of that.

    <checks website>
They appear to be more "real" engineers than anything I've dealt with.

Please don't. I've already puked twice this morning thanks to the cat
shitting all over the utility room floor. There must've been a coyote
or something sat by the catflap when she wanted to go out in the night.
