I was working one of the specials laid on for the day, at the point the
railway follows the M1 I emerged from Elstree tunnel to see the last car
of the funeral cortege pass by, then a few minutes later three grit
layers holding back the massive tailback of 'normal' cars.

I do regret not running a little earlier so I could have given the silly
twat a right sending off with my horn.

    Paul Corfield muttered
I had this one out with Bear a while back. Essentially I think Clarke
is driven by dogma which makes for bad real politik.
Quite so. Bad Chancellor, bad Minister for Education. Charismatic,
electable sure. But I think he'd do more damage than Thatcher or
    Major.
    Agreed, on both counts
I'm sure they don;t - I tend to lean towards conservatism, but I'm
emphatically no Tory. While their antics are risible, really it's too
    serious for levity.

Mind you, that seems to have happened already.
I don't see how Clarke will get them elected. He's completely
unattractive and that's what people seem to vote for these days - you
have to be princess blair. I liked Hague as a politician but he never
stood a chance being a little balding guy. Portillo could have stood a
chance but I don't think the Sun readers would vote for him.

Maybe they should put Esther McVey in the running...

Perhaps we'll get a Burrell for Christmas.

Oh, and Tom in Home&Away died on mine.

So did my sister, but not whilst at Cambridge. She worked in a chemists
    shop in Bedford.

I couldn't agree with you more.

You need a strong opposition for good government. I don't think the SDP
can provide that to Labour and until the in-fighting is completed
    neither can the Tories.

I did exactly the same thing I did on her wedding day; rode a two stroke
motorcycle, like a ****, around the centre of Bath. Happy Days.

    Too old to be PM.

He'd spend half a term as leader of the opposition, soften up labour and
get a reduced labour majority at the next election.

Then another half a term trying to whip the Tories into some sort of
electable shape handing over to a repentant Portillo around 2007 ready
for an election in 2010 that the Tories would have a chance of winning.

    And then I woke up.

"Dream Ticket" the last time I remember that being used was Hattersley
and Kinnock in heavens only knows when...

Mind you, Kinnock did most of the ground work to make Labour electable.
I can't see *anything* that John Smith did, he seemed to be badly missed
by the party but... why? What was it he did that was so good, apart from
die to get the sympathy vote...
