    Fantastic.

    "Dear Santa,

Please buy me a Gunson compression tester. Yes, I know you've got no
idea what it's for, just buy it anyway. Yes, I do need one. Oh, and if
you could possibly deliver it early, that'd be great."

In the interests of covering my arse, can I just point out that many
things made 20+ years ago still work, whilst the same things made 5
years ago don't. I'm sure most of us have elderly relatives still using
the Hoover/Hotpoint they were given as a wedding present in 1962, &
therefore think Hoover/Hotpoint is the most reliable brand. Things
    change.

  4. Using the patented Mavis Beacon "Hunt&Peck" Technique, Eddie
Make sure it includes the adapter for the size of spark plug on the
    cylinder you want to test.

  5. Indeed. The one I bought came with interchangeable heads.

Another idea to throw into the mix:

There's a problem with #3 or #4 cylinder, and in your attempts to make
it balance, you've wound #4 so far shut that it's acting as a throttle
stop and lifting the other three throttles slightly.

That would explain the revs and the lack of change in #4.

Still doesn't explain the original problem, though.

I knew that was the kind of thing you meant; I just think it might have
    been better phrased.

(Blimey, even pedanticism with a smiley is too much for some people...)

    Oooh, good one.
Ah, but there was a change on the gauge for #4: it was *way* down to
start with, (not registering at all) but came up to match #3 upon some
twiddling with the appropriate screw. Good thought, though.
Something I spotted tonight might help, but I need to wait for the
weekend so I can run the engine up again; I don't think the neighbours
would be too happy about me revving it up at this time of night.

He's been working for a living.

I think his employers have finally realised that he's been slacking for
the last four years, and are expecting him to make up for lost time.

That's mostly due to him being off hob-nobbing with the Coupe owners
    club, actually.
