They are but they're just that, buildings, without the congregation.
It's the people that makes the church.
    religion.

Religion should be a personal expeience between yourself and God but
it's good to share your experience.

Do you have numbers tattooed on your head?
    Do dogs bark at you?
Is you name Damien or Stan?
Do horses go wild when they sense you?

If you answered yes to any of the above you're a biker. ;o)

    and again...
I'm with you on that one Darsy. I went to church every week for the first
17 years of my life, but haven't been for the last 8 years.

A quote from Red Dwarf springs to mind:

LISTER : "There's no such thing as silicon heaven."

KRYTEN : "Then where do all the calculators go?"

    ....

"It's common sense sir, if there wasn't an afterlife to look forward to, why
on earth would machines spend the whole of their lives servicing humankind?
Now that would be really dumb!"

Agreed, which is why I said there is much to be admired. The personal
strength that some people have gained from their faith has allowed them
to achieve great things. Which can range from simple day to day survival
    or huge social change.

OTOH, the repressive nature of many churches and the use of faith to
justify agendas far removed from the basic tenets of their religion
    should be opposed.

And inconsistent too. IIRC didn't Jacob get his inheritance from his
blind father by dressing in a goatskin to imitate his hairy elder
brother and get away with it with the connivance of god?

Yep, with you every step Ace. Look after the missus and the kids will
look after themselves... no, maybe that was... **** it, never mind.

Yeah, OK. I GET THE POINT. SORRY. I FORGOT. <<sits in corner of room
    and snivels quietly>>

Considering how much drivel and OT shit there is in this NG there seem
to be a hell of a lot of people concerned about wasted bandwidth.

Yep. I asked my EX-accountant, who was little miss church goer, a few
questions. It went something like this:

Me, "So which came first, good or eveil?"
Her, "Well, god created everything including Adam and Eve"
    "So god created evil?"
    "No, god is all good"
"So where did eveil come from?"
"Well, there was this snake thing..."
    "What? Who created THAT?"
"Ummm, you'll have to ask the vicar. He'd like to have a chat with
    you."
"Well, you don't convince me. I don't believe any of it."
    "That's a shame."
    "Why?"
"Because you will burn in hell if you don't believe it."
    "Your sacked." (1)

So it didn't really take a lot of questioning to bring her down. Logic
    versus religion.

    (1) Well, it was tempting to say that. I found a better excuse later
    on though.

what you're actually saying is that 2 minutes of thought isn't nearly
enough to understand memetics - particularly your comment in your
reply to Will about "why would anyone bother to create a meme".
They're not necessarily created deliberately - they can be emergent
    properties of a chaotic system.

  14. Indeed. Especially as it explicitly says (Ezekiel?)
that God creates good and evil.

And Job says "shall we accept good from god and not evil also?".
    As a test?
Tests are no good unless they are reachable..
Because that would short-circuit his plan for the earth and its
    people..
It's a rhetorical question. God knows what they have done - but he is
trying to see what Adams response will be...
    No. Not necessarily..
Sigh. Read it in a modern version. Or at least compare several of the
    free versions..

The RSV is a good translation, loses most of the arcaisisms (sp?)
of the KJV and is pretty readable.

Or put your hand in your pocket and buy an NIV.

Hmmm, that's going to be tough given that the plan is ineffable and you are
    incorrigible.

  18. History:

    Man falls.
Man lives though a real nast bit of history (say the last 7000+
years) where they comprehensively prove that they are not at all nice.
God provides Jesus as an atoneing sacrifice.
Mankind (in the main) rejects him except for a very small minority.

    Yet to be done:

Jesus returns to the earth and founds Gods kingdom
Those who are baptised believer who are alive are judged and the dead
ones are raised and judged. Immortality is granted to those found
    worthy.
Jesus and the immortalised ones with him rule the earth
Mankind has one final rebellion against God and the 'final battle' of
man vs God takes place. God wins.
After this the current reality is done away with because all that are
left are immortalised and free of time.

    The end..
