I WANT TO RIDE A MOTORBIKE!!!!111`1`1` (but I'm clueless)

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by john henry bonham, Jul 2, 2004.

  1. Not sure where to begin. I have a full car licence (passed practical &
theory tests, I'm 24 and never had any kind of accident or incident on
    the road).

I'm seriously thinking about buying a motorbike. Don't really know what
I want. Something that makes me look like Rossi would be nice.

I guess a 125cc is a good start? Or will I be disappointed after 6
months with the lack of grunt. Will I be laughed off the road at my
    superweak machine?

I want an aprilia. One that looks like a Moto GP machine.

What licence do I go for. How much am I going to be spending on
training, licencing, a bike, helmet and leathers?

No, but you'll probably get bored with it if you use it a lot.
Oh don't! Get something cheap and not too nasty for a first bike.
Certainly not something that will cost a fortune if you drop it. (Don't
say you won't drop it, everyone says that and most people invariably do.)

Go for something powerful enough not to get bored with, but first of all,
see how you get on with bikes whilst on the training - that'll give you an
idea if you want a 600 or something bigger/smaller.
Quickest route is via DAS to get a full licence, which can cost anything
around £350 upwards for a 3 day course. Usually you'll do the CBT on the
first day, then start riding on the roads on the second and third days.
The fourth day (which is not usually counted as a training day) you'll do
    your test.

You will need to take a motorbike theory test first - though not sure what
that entails now as it all changed just after I did mine.

Cheapish helmets can range from about £60-99, big names cost around £200-
£300. Same goes for leathers - some places do secondhand gear (never buy
a used helmet though) but you'll need to shop around. Most of my kit was
secondhand, I think my leathers cost me £250 (they were like new), gloves
    £25 and boots £50.

Before deciding on a bike though, check around for insurance quotes. For a
first bike, especially if it's larger than a 125 (and you're not 50
something), it can be very expensive.

Reading the ukrm ffaq is a good place to start.

So he thinks he can drive. OK.

    But there is hope.

Sex, drugs and rock 'n roll are the top three on my list.

    A diet then?
Depends. Some folks really do like small bikes, others don't. Horses
for courses innit? The real question is how and where you intend to
ride it. From what you have said so far I would venture to suggest
badly and in wholly inappropriate places at the same time.
I want a cruiser. Something that looks like my Old VT but with twice
the engine and an inch less seat height would be nice.

The one that gives you the greatest range of options in the future.

and insurance, gloves, boots, fines, private health care,
    maintenance....

Lots and lots and lots. Although if you stay with it and make sensible
decisions at the start it turns into a steady drain on your real
disposable income over the years rather than an all out assault on your
credit worthiness every now and then.

No need to go all fucking apologetic on us. there are enough of those
around here as it is, we don't need any more.

    Haven't we all.

No, it is about your assumption that previous experience driving a cage
will be directly transferable to riding bike. Most of it won't. It is
a completely different road you will be travelling. You must understand
this. The fact you will be buying full body armour might suggest
    something to you.

Why should it astound you? They are going at the same speed as the rest
of the traffic, crowded so close together that they can see very little
of the action other than the cars in front, to the side and behind.
Throw in reading the paper, doing their make up and eating burgers while
chatting on the phone and what astounds me is how well they do. Just as
well for there NCB that we are awake and alert while we are out there
    innit eh?

Yebbut you didn't have the additional hassle of driving the cage and
having some **** distracting you by talking about things that were of no
immediate relevance like what she did.

    My point exactly.

Seriously? No, read it again. Surely you can see why I thought you probably
weren't English. I don't think grammar even got a look in.

And I don't do typos. It's beneath me.
