Don't do it the way a bloke I know did it. He's now spending 7 years
    at Her Majesty's pleasure.

Let's just call him "Twizzler" and be done with it.

I'm looking round a few agencies now. With no experience of anything
over 7.5T I'll be doing well with option 1 or 2.
Royal Mail are recruiting ATM, I'll give them a holler.
Aye, going over the water is on the horizon.

When a bloke I know left Energis to start work as a truck driver,
his leaving present was a shovel and an inflatable doll.

    Go figure.

Will let you know. I don't want to spread myself too thinly. I just want
to get some driving experience under my belt ATM.

I expect people not to spell my surname right after all these years but
FFS, my name's not Marcus, and Mark spelt with a C is a gurl's name :)

Don't be surprised. There's quite a few rigids that do nightly runs
out to Paris and back. Course, the prices aren't as good now, but a
while ago, the blokes who were on that gig were making their wages
    again in fags and vodka.
Nice firm to work for (highly unionised). Short hours, is all.
    Good luck.

I only work nights... A lot easier on the traffic front.
I was thinking about trying them out myself, one of the things to check is
that up here they want to be able to trace three years HGV experience...
might be different where you are.

The new Working Time Directive that came in 4/4/05 means we can only average
48 hours a week over 17 or 26 week period and also night drivers can be
limited to 10 hour shifts if the workforce on that site have not opted out.

Indeed. Not driving in the ratrace helps, too. I did my lessons in the
rush hour on the south coast and it was very free moving by comparison.
I've got hold of a "good"[1] agency now, the best one I've found so far
anyway. 8 to 17 quid depending on hours worked (time of the day) and if
you overnight it. Only prob with them is they want every form of ID
imaginable and around half of it I haven't got.
I've just found out (this won't be a bother to you) that if you want to
drive rigids you still need C&E. £377 a week for 48 hours, going up
after a year. More for drivers living in London.

[1] "Good" meaning they've got M&S, Tescos and a few others I'd heard of
    but have now forgotten.

It might be worth approaching the companies direct after a few months
and explaining I've been doing work for them but now they don't have to
pay a middle man and can pass some of the savings onto me.

According to a mate who drives for them, Eddie Stobart Ltd. is crying
out for relief drivers. They are even recruiting at BSB events, in
which of course they now sponsor Paul Bird's Honda team. Check Yellow
Pages etc. for your nearest depot.
