It's not big, and it's not clever.

I witnessed a sleek, glossy rat using the pedestrian lights once, at the
bottom of Hare Lane, and I wonder sometimes who really runs the place.

  5. Remember that long-running discussion about pigeons using the Tube?
People speculated that they could actually navigate in the Underground,
and knew where they were getting off.

I managed to miss that one, but was probably doing something sillier at
    the time ...
How did they buy their tickets?

  8. Nah, seriously. Some long discussion in Nature or New Scientist. I
    unremember which.

Anyway, pigeons are seen every day in the Tube, hopping on and off
trains, and someone suggested they were actually using the trains to
move around, and their own navigation systems meant they knew where they
    were.

IIRC, it took a helluva long time in the discussion, but the scientists
finally decided that the pigeons' behaviour really was random.

  11. Ahem! But as far as I know, rock pigeons and wood pigeons are two
different species. Both freeload at my pigeon feeder; I've seen no
    evidence of interbreeding.
