Actually - it's a Concerto, which was a close relative of the Civic
    line.

I don't think so. 1.6 is a twin cam K series engine. IIRC the Concerto
got the Honda lump. Andy Hewitt should be able to confirm this.

I've just checked Parkers, which confirms it as the Honda lump.

1.4 was K-series and diesels were Peugeot, 2lt was T-series, not sure
about the 1.8, though. Think it's a Rover lump of some description,
    though.

You might be right, which makes me a bit suss cos my '97 regd 216SLi
popped it's engine at 8K miles and it had 3 gearboxes in 23K miles. I
don't know how many g/boxes it's had since then cos I gave it to my ex
when we split. I didn't want it and was well prepared for her to have
    the bills it incurred.

Yours was the later shape, which did have a K-series 1.6 due to it being
an in-house Rover design. Complete with self-destructing head gaskets.

There you go, piece of shit that put me off ever buying a new Rover
product again. It wasn't so much the trouble we had, it was more to do
with 3 separate Rover dealer's attitudes to diagnosing and doing the
warranty repairs. My ex drove it around for 2 weeks with the engine
knocking like mad while waiting for a new one to arrive. They wouldn't
give us a courtesy car for that long because it was still driveable. She
had to pop into the dealer every day to get it topped up with oil
because after 3 days I refused to pay for the amount it was using.

Myself and my SO Orion would like to step forward. It cost 200 notes, 2 of
the tyres were changed for part-worns when it went in for its MOT in
November and the number plates have England logos on, but changing them
would mean an investment of a significant portion of the value of the car,
    so they're staying.

In addition it only seems to want to idle on 3 cylinders and the battery has
been flat for the past couple of months, but I am going to use it next week.

The 10 CD auto-changer works fine though, as do the 'leccy windows.

  13. Can I have a number please?
The Rover cost nowt two years ago and the only thing
I have done to it is replace the battery with one I found
    dumped somewhere.

    Yeah... me... 1984 VW Golf 1.6 - £450.

FWIW me and my mate were talking to his missus on Thursday evening, trying
to convince her that she should be proud of us both, cos we can both afford
proper motors (he drives a £750 Volvo) but choose to drive SOCs instead (OK
so he beats me, he rides a hayabusa - but when some scrote knocks it over in
the car park I can pick it back up for him peasily (ish) instead of watching
him battle like crazy with gravity </tufty squiggle> :) ).

My Golf doesn't need oil changes, thanks to Mr VW's excellent system whereby
the car uses so much of the bloody stuff that what's left in the sump is
never more than a few thousand miles old. Bloody crap it is, and according
to the manual this is "normal", i.e to use a litre every thousand miles.
Anyway, it got punted up the arse this week on the M40, so as soon as it is
fixed it's going (because it also is now using an alarming amount of water
    as well).
