  2. It was somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the

    Lovely.

Fwiw, I'd really like to live in a house at the end of, or adjacent to,
a small airfield. The noise of small piston engined planes taking off is
a balm to my ears. A house within staggering distance of the flying club
    bar, for preference.

We used to get "Death in Service" coffins carried for free and "Death in
    Retirement" for £1.50 (or somesuch).

    We don't anymore.

People have attempted it. At a new housing estate next to a freight line
we were restricted to 30mph because of complaints about noise.

Instead of 50 for length passing fairly quickly at 3am it carried on for
    a fair while.

Empty 100t bogie wagons on jointed rail, not so much clickety-clack
clickety-clack as a reverberating BANG BANG ... BANG BANG BANG BANG ...
BANG BANG BANG BANG ... BANG BANG BANG BANG ... BANG BANG for another
    25 wagons

<memories of East Acton at 3 in the morning>

Was it between Old Oak Depot, and Acton Mainline, perchance?
I wouldn't mind, but they made the whole block shake, and we were

some people really are thick. Please tell me that they extended the
runway to ensure they were compliant with the plans.

No, the restriction was near Eastleigh.

But we weren't supposed to stand under the concrete bridge at Acton yard
as the purge valves from the air reservoirs on the 59xxx used to
(probably still do) echo across all of West London.

In the '70s and 80s there used to be a woman in the flats near
Paddingtons loco stabling roads, for the life of me I've forgotten the
name of, used to throw milk bottles at the crews.

That would be the same as the dumbfucks who bought houses directly under the
Filton approach, and then discovered that /planes fly over their houses/.

Funny - that's all that the Royal Mail seem to be redirected from my
current house in Essex to here.

I wonder what they're doing with all the love letters that come in.
Maybe they've employed a secretary to respond to them all. Good-oh.

I wouldn't doubt it. The thing is, all the circuit venues do far more
during the week than at weekends. Performance driving schools,
trackdays, corporate entertainment and suchlike. The vehicles used in
events like that tend to be road legal and much quieter than racing
machinery - the only audible evidence of their presence from half a
mile distance is the continuous squealing of tyres. QED.
