... but that duty doesn't extend to understanding the political process.

It's not a cliche; its ignorance.

Great. Laziness, ignorance and now finally absolving yourself of
    responsibility.

    I'm impressed.

I would suggest you base your observations on facts rather than the
    London local papers ...

There are huge IR problems within LUL. TBH a lot of them are fuelled by
outside forces with various anti LUL/union/Ken axes to grind which is
    really unhelpful.

I know a fair bit on this subject and I'd be quite happy to chat about it
at the BOSM. For various reasons I'm not happy discussing it here.

What do you think one would do if the other didn't exist?

Without unions there would be a lot more people living well below what
most would classify as 'poverty level' than there are now.

  4. Cheers for bunching me in with the "arseholes". Nice motivating comment
    - follows on nicely from being branded as dullards by Ken before he took
us over. Oh and now we're brilliant or not - depending on who is
    throwing random opinions around today.
Well indeed. However the RMT have hardly covered themselves in glory of
late. Your lot seem to have rather more astute in their approach.
Interesting that you view them as "huge". I cannot claim to be close to
any of the issues - thank god - but it takes two to have an argument. No
one is blameless in all of this.
Spoilsport! Send me an E Mail with the all the details then.

One of the guys where I'm working at the moment was going on about how there
was no point in having unions. I waited until the topic of conversation
moved on to something else, then asked him where he was going for his
holidays. After he'd given me chapter and verse, I said, "Of course,
without unions, you wouldn't get any holidays at all, paid or unpaid." He
seemed to believe that things had always been as they are now, and if they
weren't, equivalent terms and conditions would evolve naturally through
    competition between employers...

Never did social history, then. Or heard of the Tolpuddle Martyrs or Annie
    Besant, for that matter.

It's a bit like speaking to young gels; they can't believe anyone could
possibly have ever been refused a job on an overt gender basis.

    that complicated stuff, can they?

    Bless them.

Would I really be a better person if I did? Or happier? I understand
the basics of the mechanics, as it were; a fine idea, until human
nature gets involved. It may be the best compromise available, but
    it's still a compromise.
Enlighten me. I've voted for every Labour candidate to have been
soundly defeated in the Penrith & The Border constituency for the last
16 years, although I now live in Carlisle itself, up to now a fairly
secure Labour city. I haven't changed anything, and nor will I.
If that's your take on it, fine. I've just never been in a position
where trade union membership was an issue. That's still the case.
Maybe it'll change, and then I'll find out what I need to. I see no
necessity otherwise. I'm an unskilled warehouse monkey grinding my
life away. I'm a number on a thousand lists, making my contribution
to the balance sheets of the world. That's it.

Too bloody right. It makes me wish to smack their silly faces. And I am
fairly against violence. Mostly. But I'll make exceptions.

The Daily Snail has a ghastly columnist called Melanie Phillips who does
this quite regularly, and I would rather like to hurt her. She also, of
course, rails against all sorts of other modern ills. <snort>

Heh. It still seems counter-intuitive that Australia enfranchised women
    years before Britain.

  12. Yep. Most of the folk around who don't believe in unions, if they were
alive in the 17th/18th/19th centuries would have a pretty shit (and
    short) life.

You sound like you currently feel that your employment/pay/terms and
conditions etc are secure. This may be because you don't work in the UK.

In a business [1] world still driven by the holy motive of profit
maximization, we would be on a course back to 19th C. conditions of
employment without the continued existence of trade unions. Even I
    understand that one.

[1] Is it necessary to have that word in there?

    Well they would, wouldn't they?

Actually "huge" maybe overstating the case now, certainly two months ago
there were major problems, helpfully stoked by Dick Murray.

Both sides - for the want of a better description - are under a lot of
    pressure.

The fact the tube runs as well and as safely as it does is a /fucking/
