That really is rather a cruel thing to say.

I've not been drinking since the end of August so that hasn't affected
the volume of posts but I've been a bit busy in a new role within the
Trade Union and Labour world; which has.

If Trade Unions, the Labour movement and democracy in general
genuinely made life better for ordinary people, they would be banned
    immediately.
Do the vacuous stuff. It's way more fun than reality. Beer is your

This demonstrates a number of things but mainly a paucity of original
thought as it is a very second hand quote.

It may be worth considering what the last 172 years have been about and
to a certain extent the last 26 or so.

However, to answer your original 'point': they are banned in many
    countries and emasculated in others.

    "Heh" aside.

There is a statement from Marx - I think it's in "Articles on Britain" -
that basically says there will be no revolution in Britain because of the
    chip shops.

    Or something ...

    Perhaps not Marx.

He died in 1883 and the first chip shop was 1860 or so - therefore
unlikely and I may have unconsciously made that bit up.

It was probably Lenin in his undervalued polemic "The Harry Ramsden
    Franchise - an infantile disorder".

  17. I have been watching "Tory, Tory, Tory" on BBC4 which tracks the
development of "Thatcherism" and what happened when she got into power.
Last week's episode took us through the 1970s up to the Falklands War.
It was actually quite unnerving to be reminded of how absolutely bloody
awful the early 1980s were with the riots and huge levels of
unemployment. Last episode is this week - Wed at 21.00.

Funnily enough, I never miss an opportunity to vote; I have too much
respect for the sacrifice made by my grandads' generation, and see it
as a duty to them, if not today's society. I just don't feel it does
anything in the current political climate, as they all seem as bad as
each other, and have little to do with me; it's a cliché I know, but
whoever you vote for, the politicians are still in control. As for
the trade union issue, tbh my knowledge and personal experience is
minimal, and there are other things I won't go into here, for reasons
    which must remain my own.

What puts me off union are the way they behave in situations where they
can wield real power like the London Underground, I know management can
be arseholes but having two teams of arseholes working in opposition to
each other isn't a pretty sight.
