I saw an amazing thing!

Today on the way home from Sunday morning pickup hockey, we were
overtaken by a couple on a Harley-Davidson motorcycle. But that wasn't
the amazing thing. They were both wearing full-face helmets ... and that
wasn't the amazing thing either. What was amazing was that it seemed
perfectly normal to me, and they didn't look like dorks!

  2. Next thing you know, they'll be running the stock pipes too...

  3. I've noticed that too. HD is working quite hard to attract the dork
set. [1] What else to do? They've already got all the cool types
    riding their products... ;)

    [1] And I don't like it, I tell you!

  6. Well, in cases like yours, I just explain it this way: You probably
    will, someday! ;)

Saw quite a few with full face helmets, stock pipes and warm textile gear
with proper armor today at the Polar Bear Grand Tour ride here in Jersey.

Granted, they were outnumbered by the half helmeted, loud piped, bandana
wrapped around the face, leather chap types.

Oh, yeah, I forgot to mention that. I saw 'em way back there, but I
never heard 'em. Stock pipes are teh coolzerz.

    I have. That's why I ride Hondas. I don't need vibrators.

I saw a guy on Lawrence Expressway riding a super motard. But wait, he
    was wearing three new tires.

It makes me happy to see people intelligently protected on the road.
Shorts, tee shirts, flipflops, sneakers, beanie helmets, I've seen it all.

One day I was headed down from Riverside on 15. A pack of Harleys passed
me; beanie helmets, leather vests, girlies in halter tops, the whole
Harley biker image enchilada. They turned off on Ortega Highway. Had
they continued on south, like me, they would have run into a swarm of
bees that chose the middle of the freeway to hold a convention.

Me: full helmet, leathers, boots. I went through them and it was like a
hail storm. Not one sting. Couldn't help but reflect on how those guys
would have fared. Ouch! Owww! Hey! Ouch! Yow! My throat's swelling up!

    Lesson learned.

I haven't been riding for long, but it seems that skimpy clothing -
apart from not being safe - just isn't practical. Whenever I head over
for the US and see riders in T-Shirts, open helmets (or none at all) and
open footwear, I wonder how they feel at speeds higher than 70 or 80
km/h, when bugs, stone chips and plain old wind tears at them. Even when
wearing sunglasses, my visor wants to go down latest in second gear,
because all the wind in the face is no fun. And I can't see myself
hitting the gear lever in flip flops, or having the wind pulling at lose
clothing all the time. It's just not comfortable, is it?

You forget that Harleys seldom go over 45 mph. Even then, most old Harley
riders are deaf from windstream and ugly loud pipes.

It sure isn't. A few months ago I had a blond moment and went out
wearing clamdiggers that are just below the knee. My shins were
subjected to a constant and annoying barrage of little stuff bouncing up
from the road. Then I burned my leg on a pipe. Man, what was I smoking
that day? Stupid idea all 'round. Won't happen again, I tell you what!
