  1. Absolutely. That was why the CB750F2 was never a big hit. The Z650 and
especially the Suzuki GS750 were simply more modern, better bikes.

And the early Z650 is one of the best-looking best-proportioned Jap
    fours ever, IMHO.

It was indeed a triumph. I remember being utterly in love with it when
it first came out, with its lovely clean lines standing out in stark
contrast to the then-current crop of lardy-barges like the CB and XS
ranges. And indeed the GS, which may have represented an engineering
leap forward, but was as dull as dishwater to look at.

I rode one of those for half an hour at a Yamaha open day in Coventry
many years ago. It was like riding a pogo stick.
With a shaft and soft suspension, on opening the throttle
both ends rose together and on braking both sank together.
Entertaining and rather cute but not very fast.

  5. That was the XS1100 Sport, a slightly tweaked version of the stock
fatgut 1100, with even more torque, a slimmer fuel tank (the original
five-gallon bowser was interchangeable), and uprated suspension.

As you say, a nice-looking bike, but it never had the unity of the Z650.
    or the 400 Four.

  6. Ditchwater ;-)

But yes, you're right: clean lines and utterly anonymous.

Nothing changes, I bought my first bike out of my student loan.

Might it not have been a "Midnight Special"?

Yes, indeed. That was the US Custom version (!?)..... Mind you, the
Midnight Special was never officially imported.
