I might have changed my mind.

  1. A "turgid little snot gobbler" surely?

I grew up in the North-East, but moved to North Devon in 1984. One
night in the pub in mid-1985, one of my friends pushed a newspaper
across the table to me - they were advertising _streets_ of terraced
houses for 11,500 quid - for a whole block of ~15 houses.

[house prices in the North East]
Well part of my family lives in Bishop Auckland so I have certainly
    heard of Etherly.

Not at all surprised about the prices you quote.
Well yes but look how much you have to spend to make it worth opening
the front door and even if you did I'd imagine it would be smashed to
    smithereens within hours.

  6. You can buy a property for £10k. It costs say £30K to make habitable.
The area it is in is so badly run down with such dreadful people living
there that you either (a) never get the job finished because so much is
nicked from the work site or (b) if it ever is finished the local yobs
will smash the place to bits and steal anything decent before you move
in. In other words why bother buying it in the first place.

I can't imagine that outsiders with money would be welcomed in places
like Benwell, Elswick or at a guess somewhere like Harton (for the South
    Shields shit hole example).

    Better?
