They basicly said get stuffed, we have no plans to change making adverts
noisier than the TV progs. Which is fair enough...

So, what can the likes of joe public do to change this situation?

I do, but just wanted to see what they had to say about what they did.

It's called Dynamic Range Compression. If you record a sample of the
programme and a sample of the advert you will find that the advert
will probably be 5db LOWER than the programme.

It is illegal in the UK to have adverts at a higher volume than the
main programme. To get around this the advert makers mix their audio
so that everything is at a high a volume as possible, which makes it
    more noticable.

The same kind of things are done for songs on the radio, all of the
volumes are maxed out so that you don't keep having to turn the radio
up/down when a different track comes on. IIRC one can get plugins
like AudioStocker for WinAmp that do the same thing at home.

I just press the mute button, and sometimes go and get coffee and cake.
If I'm recording a program, I also press pause on the recorder. Makes
for unbroken viewing when you watch it again.

Heh.. just wait until pop up ads come to TV.

Should not one be enquiring into the address of the owner of the ad
    company?

I can't stand that, my old Land lady used to do it, a few seconds of
this, thirty seconds of that. Just enough to get the interest peeked,
then move on. Sign of the times maybe..

Ask them why they are not using a perceived loudness meter, as do CH4
    etc?

They certainly use BPR perceived-loudness meters, but whether an earlier
version or not I don't know.

Is it just me or does anyone else think Britney Spears song 'Poison' seems
    to jump a few decibels?
Really embarrassing if you have thin walls..
