I love insurance companies...

After my current classic bike insurer managed to send through their renewal
quote roughly a week after the insurance had expired I don't think I'll be
renewing with them, especially as a very useful feature has been taken off
    the insurance policy[1].

So it was time for the usual phoneaton on Friday. Well, strangely enough
only three companies seem to be advertising in Classic Bike at the moment,
    so I phoned all three.

As expected Aunty Carole came through with a reasonable quote but I'm a bit
wary recently when it comes to taking out policies with them as I've had a
few surprises in the last couple of years with undisclosed restrictions on
the policy that I've only found out about later - like a cap on the bike
    value and stuff like that[2].

I also spoke to a very nice man from Peter Best who clearly knew his onions
and strangely enough, was selling more or less the same policy as Aunty
Carole, underwritten by Equity Red Star. He talked me through the policy
(agreed value and all that for a good price) but at the end asked the
killer question - "do you want to commute on any of these bikes?". The
affirmative answer added another 25 quid to the policy and suddenly, the
dreaded words "hang on a minute..." were heard from the other end of the
    phone line.

It appears that commuting cover on this policy invalidates the "agreed
value" part of the policy so even though the premium is calculated based on
the value of the bikes. Eh?

Time to phone CN on Monday and find out if they have the same restriction on
    their policy...

    [1] Breakdown cover.[3]
[2] Q for the legal bods - is this actually legal to impose a restriction on
the policy that isn't mentioned anywhere in the paperwork?
    [3] Stop sniggering.

    Very interesting.
I got quoted £100 from CN for a 1960's moped(1)for tpft, and thought
that hugely expensive. I only pay a bit more than twice that for fc on a
    900 Trophy.

    'ow *much*?

I'm being quoted around 120 quid for the three SOBs in my sig, fully comp
with 3k limit/year. Garaged, in London.

  4. Yup, £100. 80 odd from James Footman too.
Could be because I declared a claim from last autumn when a sodding
labrador committed suicide under my car and stuffed the front bumper and
aircon condensor etc. in it's demise. How that extrapolates to higher
risk on a 2 wheeler is anybody's guess because it's dead now, but I
suppose these insurance parasites know what they're doing :-(( No collar
on the hound of course, although if anybody reading knows who lost a lab
in Newton Burgoland last autumn I'd be keen to know!
I'll have to do some online quote experiments, varying the scenarios.
Just had a horrible thought that the Trumpet may go up too.

Ah yes, Footman James - must give them a ring tomorrow. Last one on my
list but I couldn't find it in Classic Bike.
"Because we can" is the reason you're looking for, I'd guess....
If you've claimed on anything you can be pretty sure it will.

    Arrrrggggghhhhhhhh.

That aside, would you be able to help with drilling out four bolts on
the Pan next weekend? The same ones that I wanted to get drilled out
    since I bought the thing?

Possible. I'm *just* possibly wandering up to BOSM for the day on the
Saturday, but I'll be around on the Sunday.

Phone numbers as previously emailed. Give me a bell later in the week,
    I'll know more.

Have you got round to them yet? They did me for £98 which
was for 5 bikes (K100RS, R51/3, NSU Prima and a couple of
mopeds). I was pretty pleased with this, and it does include
    recovery etc...

If you need it the number is 0845 330 1662

Yep, phoned them yesterday - the quote was about 20 quid more than what
Carole Nash and Peter Best quoted and I'm assured that it is agreed
    value.

Time to give Aunty Carole another ring and find out if their policy is
agreed value with the commuting thrown in or not.
