    OK...

....you know how we like to point out how evil and stupid America is for
advancing its agenda through its support of various extremist groups and
despots around the world? We say that this is an enormously short-sighted
and cynical thing to do, because it ignores the part of those nasty
characters' agenda which doesn't coincide with its own, and the short-term
problems such deals with the devil solve are invariably piddling in
comparison to the long-term problems they create.

Now consider what you have done here... you have a thing against 4WD's (to
put it in broad terms), and you've applauded the torching of 20 unsold
road-registrable Humvees at a California car dealership by people who seem
to be dealing with their overprivileged upper middle-class upbringing by
becoming "militant eco-terrorists", in the mould of Brad Pitt's character in
    12 Monkeys...

    Can you see the similarities?

But, IK, this is the root of the whole problem (yes, Clem, I typed root!).

The difference between a terrorist and a freedom fighter is only in the
point of view of the person using the term.

Blow up people/things that I don't like, you are a freedom fighter.

Blow up people/things that I do like, you are a terrorist.

But you knew that, didn't you? :)

I see what you are getting at. The difference being, in the first case it is
the world's most powerful empire using their might against people who are
unable to defend themselves. In the latter, it is the victims and the
oppressed who are rising up against their oppressors.
Another analogy maybe that it is bad for Americans to kill Iraqis, but
Iraqis are quite justified in killing Americans. Even though they are
performing the same action, the justification lies in the reason behind it.

  8. Just before everyone went stupid... we got the **** out because we were
broke, not because we were being shot at. Remarkable how one almost
uniformly can follow the other; starve a man of opportunity, then toss an AK
in his lap and stand back... watch what he does.

  10. Croatia... just last week, a mate of one of the blokes on their version of
aus.moto had his Buell stolen. Cops found it when the thief, a veteran of
the war of independence, had taken it to a bikeshop to get a tyre changed.
His reasoning, and I translate verbatim, "Why did I bother fighting if I
can't now even take a bike I like for a ride?"

A sign of how far the country's come - the cops arrested him and gave the
Buell back to its rightful owner. Five years ago, they would've shook his
hand and apologised for the intrusion before putting the word out among
other coppers not to bother him further...

  14. Fuggen fickle-arse, short-attention-span chemist cahn... first he wants to
know when, then he wants to know where, then when again... next question'll
    probably be "what's for lunch?"...

  15. Just exactly _who_ is being opressed by the owners and staff of a
    california car dealership?

[snip: this bit was just disgusting]
