When I worked at a petrol station (about 25 years ago) my wages were
split 50/50 between 'salary' and 'bonus'. Any shortages were removed
from the 'bonus'. This was before the minimum wage and paid about 40
    quid a week.

  2. See also Burnt's response - for me it was around 1977 - 78, it was not
legal then[1] so only dodgy employers tried it. I don't doubt that
some employers would still force staff to make up shortages now.

[1] Girl I knew worked for the Post Office and eventually was taken
off the counter because she could never manage to balance the books.
They never tried to recover the shortfall.

  3. Funny isn't it. I was riding in the outside lane of the M25 gently
drifting past traffic in the inside three lanes.

A car behind woke me up by flashing me - fair cop I hadn't been looking
in my mirror. I briskly accelerated away from him and pulled into the
inside lane at the next oppotunity to let him past. Pretty damn polite
    of me IYAM.

Anyway he can't accelerate as fast as me so it's a while before he gets
past me and as he passes he gives the wanker sign. Now what the ****
for? I can't have kept him waiting for more than a few seconds. As soon
as I saw him I moved as fast as I could. A wave of thanks would seem
    more appropriate.
